I have a pretty cool dad. A father takes on many roles in the life of his children, and each role shows a different side of his love. My own father had his own roles in my life as well but such roles cannot be directly seen but can be felt like the air that surrounds my home. I consider Mr. Reynaldo Floreta as a great father because of his roles that he showed throughout my life such as being a soldier in my family, a poet in his teachings, and a king in his humble service.
A soldier is someone who stands on the front lines to defend others. He sacrifices comfort, faces battles, and shows discipline and courage in protecting those entrusted to him. Soldiers are willing to fight not for themselves, but for the safety and future of others. In this sense, my father is a soldier but not in a camouflage and black boots. Instead, he is a soldier dressed in a neatly pressed blue polo shirt, slacks that have seen countless lectures, and a chalk-stained hand. He defends our family from life’s hardships by working tirelessly as a teacher to provide food on the table. He shields us from uncertainty by giving us a safe home to stay in, much like a soldier guards a fortress. Beyond protecting, he also fights for our future. He wages daily battles as a teacher with only a modest salary, showing the discipline and sacrifice of a true soldier. His office is a small corner beneath the stairs, much like Harry Potter’s cupboard, but instead of being a place of neglect, it has become his command post, where he quietly wages battles against ignorance with only his pen, far mightier than a sword. In that humble space, he shows the courage, sacrifice, and endurance of a soldier, proving that strength is not measured by weapons or armor but by the heart that fights for one’s family. Even when it is difficult, he never misses a day of work, because he knows his consistency ensures the stability of our family’s future. In his sacrifice, protection, and discipline, I see the soldier in my father.
My father is also a poet. As a values education teacher, he uses words not just to explain lessons but to inspire minds, much like poets use language to stir emotions. His chalkboard becomes his parchment, and the chalk dust on his fingers is the ink of his verses. The activities he gives such as reflection essays that ask students to look into their hearts, group role-plays that let them act out honesty and kindness, and discussions that challenge them to think about what it means to live a good life are the stanzas of his poetry. Just like poets who instill valuable insights into their readers, he shares wisdom with his students and with me. Beyond teaching, he has a creative mind that writes poetry for the school’s publication, playing with words in ways that are sometimes puzzling even to me. In his teaching and writing, I see the soul of a poet who uses words to create lasting impact.
Lastly, my father is a king but the kind of king we see in chess who merely waits around, moving only one square at a time while relying on his queen to do the work. Instead, he is a king who leads through humility and service. I remember the words, “Those who humble themselves will be exalted,” and I see this in him every day. He does not sit back and command others; he steps forward and takes action himself. Just like Jesus, the King of kings who washed the feet of his apostles, my father shows his kingship in service. He washes the dishes, does the laundry, and makes sure everything is ready for us. In this way, he proves that true kingship is not about authority or dependence but about leading through love and service.
In conclusion, my father is a soldier who protects our family and fights for our future, a poet who teaches with wisdom and creativity, and a king who leads with humility and service. These three roles show the greatness of his character. Whenever I think about all of it, I know one thing for sure: I have a pretty cool dad.
