Crisostomo Ibarra is back, as Simoun in El Filibusterismo, Ibarra left the Philippines and rose to prominence as a jeweler in El Filibusterismo. He returned to the Philippines going by the name of Senor Simoun. Back in Noli Me Tangere, he wants to fight the Spain dictatorship with peace and no violence however in this novel he revenges with brutal violence because he was not successful back then. More so, due to his desire to be fully free from the tyranny of the Spaniards. He is more furious toward the documentary when he also learns that his lover, Maria Clara, passed away in the convent. However, in El Filibusterismo Simoun is the Captain-trusted General's advisor, wherein he uses it as an opportunity to ignite a protest movement by pushing them to do irrational decisions so that they can abuse their authority. With the help of the now-adult Basillio he was able to organize his revenge plan at first, Basillio was hesitant to participate in Simoun's notion but soon later he still cooperates on his plan for Simoun. Simoun began to organize riots and hide weapons in an ally's store. Simoun also discloses to Basilio his plan to hide an explosive chemical that contains nitroglycerin inside a pomegranate-styled Kerosene lamp. That Lamp will be given to the newlyweds as a gift during the wedding reception of the former lover of Isagani who is a friend of Basilio. The place will be headed to late Captain Tiago's residence, where Simoun planted the explosive chemical. Simoun claims that the lamp will only burn for 20 minutes before flickering; if anyone tries to turn the wick, it will explode and anyone in the reception will be affected. So, Simoun leaves the reception early and writes "Mene Thecel Phares," which translates to "the future is predetermined" and often implies that a negative event will occur. Simoun wrote his real name, "Juan Crisostomo Ibarra," as his signature. The people at the reception were all shocked when they saw the signature of Ibarra because they all knew that Ibarra was already dead. And then, the bulb began to dim, and Basilio was about to leave the house because he thought it would explode at any moment when he saw Isagani. Isagani was there in the reception to see his ex-girlfriend who is now married. Immediately Basilio informed him about the explosion that will happen because he is concerned about his safety. But Isagani has begun to run to stop the explosion. When Isagani entered, a priest was ready to fix the lamp, but he immediately gets it and hurled it out the window into the nearby river. Isagani leaped out of the window and into the river as the guards chased him. After the incident happened the band was already caught and they admitted that Simoun was their leader. Thus, he is now wanted as Simoun and as Ibarra. After a long time, a kind priest saw Simoun strolling down the shore. And then, Simoun introduced himself as Ibarra and told the priest that he was deeply saddened and furious over the failure of the revolution that he is planning to do, that he questioned God why the people of the Philippines and him is suffering instead of the tyrant Spaniards. The kind priest told Simoun that all consequences will be meted out in due time. After that, Ibarra passed away while holding the priest's hand. Lastly, the priest flung all the remaining diamonds of Ibarra into the sea as they believed that they would always be utilized for good.
