Capers Jones Writes about Sarasota in 2050 with some Checking by AI
Capers Jones: I’m attaching a study I will be sending to the Sarasota County Commissioners this week before the mandatory Zoom workshop about building new hotels on Siesta Key. Using Artificial Intelligence to Design A New Sarasota for 2050. Report by Capers here.
Instead of jamming hotels onto the mainland they should be floating hotels, with construction materials and guests arriving by boats. This report shows pictures of underwater hotels, artificial islands, floating cities, water taxis, and self-driving vans used in Japan and China. The same technologies could benefit Florida coastal towns such as Sarasota and St. Petersburg. Many of the illustrations were created by artificial intelligence. The Google Bard AI tool was used for fact checking, and for some of the illustrations. The text is by the author. Buildings constructed using 3D printing can be curved, so future homes and hotels will be more graceful than rectangular homes and hotels built with lumber and cement. They will also be designed by artificial intelligence. This combination is about 60% cheaper than older methods and twice as fast.
Capers lives on Siesta Key but works internationally as a technology consultant. He was a global consultant for IBM and now is the owner of an AI consulting company that specializes in analysis of AI benefits and risks. This report emphasizes benefits for urban design and transportation brought on by artificial intelligence planning tools.

Copyright Office Urges Caution on Impact of AI Deep Fakes
The US Copyright Office has released part one of wide-ranging report on the impact of the recent artificial intelligence boom—and “digital replicas,” more commonly known as deepfakes, are the first topic of concern. From “AI-generated musical performances to robocall impersonations of political candidates to images in pornographic videos,” the report acknowledges that “a new era of sophisticated digital replicas has arrived.” And while the technology has long existed to produce such deepfakes, the report concludes that rapid advancement of generative AI suggests that new federal legislation is needed.

Capers Jones of Sarasota Shares 2 AI Papers: the Military and Benefits/Rewards
Capers Jones: Artificial intelligence (AI) is a new technology that is changing many fields. One of these is the way military equipment will be operated. Instead of human pilots, new aircraft will be controlled by artificial intelligence. There are also AI submarines without crews, and AI-controlled battle tanks. This article shows recent examples of AI-designed and operated military equipment. Note: The AI tool Google Bard was used for fact checking in this draft. Many of the illustrations were produced using artificial intelligence. As of 2023 AI-generated illustrations cannot be copyrighted. Commentary here.

The Book Talking to Robots Imagines Our Future in Dozens of Scenarios
From SFW president Mark Mathes: The 2019 book Talking to Robots is a quick and thought-provoking read about how our society and specifically writers and publishers can deal with artificial intelligence, or AI. That’s the topic April 4 by Siesta Key technologist and published author Capers Jones.
Here are a few quick takeaways from the book, Talking to Robots: Tales from Our Human-Robot Futures by David Ewing Duncan. NPR review.
Journalism Bot: “In the future, we have robots that can instantly call out a lie.”
Sex [Intimacy] Bot: “In the future, no one has sex without their intimacy bot from Aphrodite, Inc.”
The Future: “In the future we will all remember when the robots truly arrived.”
The author wisely is straight with his readers. He lists “actual humans interviewed for this book” adjacent to his splendid Table of Contents.
