Sources for Cataloging Standards

The RiverShare consortium is committed to coordinating a database of high quality bibliographic records for collective use by member libraries. These bibliographic records are the shared property of the consortium regardless of the number of holdings attached. It does not matter which library “created” the record, who transferred it into the database, or who has edited it since. Maintaining the quality and integrity of each bibliographic record is an interest and a responsibility we all share. The RiverShare Technical Services Committee sets standards for these records and oversees quality assurance.

1.1 List of Reference Materials

It is recommended that libraries participating in the RiverShare Consortium have the following cataloging resources available to the cataloging staff:

1.1.1 RDA Toolkit

Implementation of Resource Description & Access (RDA) began March 31, 2013 and will replace AACR2 as the new cataloging standard. RiverShare member libraries are encouraged to purchase access to the online toolkit

Print version: RDA: Resource Description and Access, 2014 revision.

Library of Congress Program for Cooperative Cataloging Policy Statements (LC – PCC PS)

The Library of Congress and the Program for Cooperative Cataloging announced a title change of the "Library of Congress Policy Statements" to "Library of Congress-Program for Cooperative Cataloging Policy Statements" (LC-PCC PSs) effective with the October 2012 release of the RDA Toolkit. The new title reflects the ongoing collaboration of LC and PCC in adopting a single set of policy statements, with clear labels indicating any differences in application. Adding "PCC Practice" statements has already begun, and will be ongoing until completed; developing new policy statements, negotiating changes to existing statements, etc., will be an ongoing activity shared by LC and PCC.

Current Library of Congress-Program for Cooperative Cataloging Policy Statements (LC-PCC PSs) are freely available as part of the RDA Toolkit. Go to Access the RDA Toolkitand click on the "Resources" tab; a license to the Toolkit is not required. This allows fast and easy access through a single source to the most current policy information. Copies of LC-LCC PSs are also available in Cataloger's Desktop.
