Press Release: "Rivers and Destinies" – A Tale of Friendship, Freedom, and Fate

Wichita County, Texas – February 2025 – Rivers and Destinies is a novel that will be released on February 1, 2025. It tells the captivating story of two boys whose fates are forever intertwined on a Tennessee plantation. Set against the backdrop of early 19th-century America, the narrative explores the profound bond between Mabel Gilbert, a privileged young boy, and Henry, an enslaved child who faces a tragic separation from his mother.

Mabel’s father, the plantation master in Dickson County, forces a heartbreaking decision by selling Esther, a beloved enslaved woman, to another estate, which tears her away from her young son, Henry. This event sets the stage for a lifelong connection between Mabel and Henry that defies the rigid boundaries of race, class, and circumstance.

As they grow up, their friendship flourishes. Despite the stark difference in their stations, Mabel becomes Henry’s confidant, teaching him to read and dreaming of a life beyond the plantation. In return, Henry introduces Mabel to the raw beauty of nature, teaching him how to hunt, fish, and live off the land—knowledge that Mabel’s father, a stern plantation owner, never offers him. Their bond deepens, and despite the looming expectations of Mabel becoming a gentleman plantation owner, they share dreams of escape.

Mabel’s privileged future is set: his family expects him to inherit the plantation and marry his cousin, Charity Morris. However, Charity, also trapped by the constraints of plantation life, yearns for freedom and adventure. Amid the financial struggles of the Panic of 1819, Mabel and Charity marry and endure hardships. Mabel becomes a steamboat captain and privateer during the War of 1812, using his travels to gain a broader perspective on the world beyond the plantation. As they save money, the couple secretly plans to journey west to Mexico, a land where slavery is abolished.

In 1837, The two families embark on a perilous journey down the Mississippi River toward the untamed West. Their voyage is fraught with challenges, including navigating river travel, the Texas Revolution, issues of slavery, and conflicts with Native American tribes. Ironically, as they face danger, loss, and profound beauty, Henry's unwavering determination shapes Mabel’s growing understanding of his own freedom while searching for Henry’s family’s true liberation.
