There’s something incredibly special, sort of magical even, about waking up way before everyone else, going to the beach, and watching the sun peek over the horizon. Panama City Beach, with its stretches of soft sands and crystal-clear waters, provides so many perfect spots for this exact sort of experience. What I'm getting at is that I want to show you my list of amazing spots. So, come with me, and together, we’ll discover the best places to catch those unbelievably amazing first rays of dawn. The spots I want to spotlight are unique, and promise unforgettable morning views, that you, too, could appreciate.
Let's start with the Russell-Fields Pier, often called the City Pier by most people who know the area. As a matter of fact, it stretches super far out into the Gulf of Mexico. In a way, that makes it ideal for watching a sunrise. Like your own private platform above the water! As I was saying, the unrestricted view lets you see the horizon with absolutely nothing blocking your vision. That, in turn, let's you watch as the sun makes its really dramatic debut. It’s also super handy, if you feel like doing a bit of fishing, you know, while you’re waiting; kill two birds with one stone, as they say. Just be mindful; there's often a small fee to go onto the pier, but in my book, the sunrise experience you are after makes it completely worth it.
Now, if you're hoping for something that combines nature with your sunrise gazing, St. Andrews State Park, more or less, hits the mark. Alright, this beautiful park has more than one vantage point for the perfect sunrise. Actually, the beach on the Gulf side offers unobstructed views of the horizon, while the area near the jetties adds something different, since you get the silhouettes of the rocks against the dawning sky. Seriously gorgeous! As I was saying, aside from catching the sunrise, this park offers the opportunity to explore the natural side of Florida, too, like your hikes or a bit of bird watching. It tends to be quite popular. Remember there's a small entrance fee, but trust me, that funds go directly to keeping this place pretty.
Speaking of state parks, let's travel a bit further west towards Camp Helen State Park. Basically, even the beach access points around this park promise a bit more peace and quiet, compared to the central beach areas. In fact, this is so helpful if you're seeking to get away from some of the larger vacation crowds that happen at more busy places. Basically, find one of the walkovers that leads you right down to the sand. It's the best way. You, too, can enjoy your own slice of paradise as you wait for the day to start, it's like having a small celebration! That is, if, like me, you see the value of escaping from crowded places. In some respects, this more quiet experience can add some contemplation as you are viewing the sun's beautiful glow, it will make for an absolutely serene and unforgettable beginning to the day.
Here’s something different: Shell Island. By the way, you need a boat to get here! This beautiful, undeveloped barrier island just a short boat ride away from Panama City Beach. Basically, the eastward-facing beaches offer pristine views of the sunrise, not to mention a true feeling of being out in nature. Typically, because it is a bit difficult to get to, the island will provide you more private spots where you can really savor the silence. What's more, if you want, combine your sunrise viewing with a little shelling and some snorkeling after dawn, that could be great. Actually, many local tour operators offer early morning trips designed particularly for sunrise viewing and shelling, so, you know, look into that. By the way, it’s always good to confirm departure times and make reservations in advance, you can even do that online.
Now, if early wake-ups sound a little tough on vacation, you may enjoy the simple experience that involves no traveling whatsoever! We, too, can value something easy. In fact, sometimes, the most stunning view is available right from your own beachfront balcony, should be the space is available. The higher the floor, the broader the horizon usually is, of course, allowing you to soak up those morning colors while barely lifting a finger. Very enjoyable! As I was saying, be sure to bring coffee or tea, that can heighten the experience and create the beginning of what will likely be a relaxing vacation day.
