While the song is familiar to most Americans today, Valdez says the meaning of its title remains a mystery. He did lots of research for the film, and thinks it's a reference to something he calls "umbamba," from Africa. "It was a beat, it was a sound, that landed on the shores of Veracruz."

I met up with the band at their first practice space, Gallegos' parents house in Highland Park and they played me their version. Where Ritchie Valens sang that, to dance la bamba, you need a little grace, singer Denise Carlos instead raps, "This is the rebellious la bamba, because we're Chicanos from East L.A. I don't believe in borders, I'll cross them."

"When we got into the studio, Ritchie showed up and he had a cold, a pretty bad cold," recalls Keane. "So I couldn't cancel the date and they couldn't get the musicians back, and I had to pay for the studio. So I had him stand off-mic and sing along with the track as we cut the track to make sure that the tempo was right and that the breaks were right and all that kind of stuff. And then later on we brought him and we had a two-track machine and we dubbed him in. There's a break and then, you know, the band goes silent, and he comes in, `Ba-la-ba-la, la bamba.' And right there he comes in just a little bit early on the off mic. So we didn't wipe it because we figured well nobody's gonna be playing this record anyway. So we didn't clean it up."

Definitely Ritchie on the guitar solo and lead rhythm for la bamba. People on another site are trying to claim it was Rene or Carol but it was not. You can hear its a strat sounding type of guitar. Carol was on acoustic, and Rene on 6 string bass danelectro. Its a shame there's not more info on Ritchie, and that Los Lobos seem to overshadow him, because the pedestrians cant tell the difference.

"La bamba" is a son jarocho, a folk music style from the Veracruz region of Mexico. String instruments like the jarana jarocha, the requinto jarocho, the arpa jarocha, and the leona are commonly featured. Here are some other well-known son jarocho:
