Market Hog Cost Breakdown

Animal $300

  • No Limit Genetics base price, students interested in getting a higher quality pig may pay $325.
  • RL uses NLG because of their quality hogs and their willingness to help our kids be successful. The breeder came to the school last year to help students with showmanship and feeding plans specific to each hog. The breeder came back out prior to the fair to give a clipping demonstration and was there on show day for last minute prep.

Feed $320

  • Animals taken to the county fair are judged on various aspects of their genetic make-up. Using a show quality feed is crucial to the growth of the pig to ensure it looks the best on show day. Below you will find the math used to come up with the amount for feed.
        • 50 lbs when they first arrive
        • 250 lbs when they sell
        • 200 lbs they need to gain
  • Pigs generally gain 1 lb for every 3 lbs of feed, we bump it up to 4 lbs just to be safe. If the pig needs to gain 200 lbs and gains 1 lb for every 4lbs of feed, we must feed 800 lbs of feed. Show quality feeds cost around $20 for 50lbs. To feed 800 lbs, students will need 16 50lb bags. 16 bags at $20 per bag is $320.

Supplements $40 OPTIONAL

  • In order to ensure the animal is at its full potential, supplements may be needed. The use of supplements is completely optional. All supplements will be purchased by the species advisor or pre approved by species advisor.

Bedding $216

  • We have the pigs for 18 weeks. We have used no more than 2 bags of shavings per week per pig. Shavings cost $6.00 a bag.

Insurance $25

  • All animals at our facility are required to be insured. If an animal dies before fair, the insurance will replace all expenses up to that point.
