My wife just bought a new iPhone 13 a week ago, ringtone is hard to hear even ringtone sound and haptics is set to the loudest setting. Notification sounds r louder than ringtone. Why? Is the iPhone defective or just a software issue?

Although the ringtone volume is up in settings, this might be due to the volume being lowered on the phone. Try calling your wife and as the call is ringing, have your wife press the volume up button. Does the volume appear to be turned up all the way on the slider that appears? If so, you can lock the ringer volume in and prevent it being changed with the side buttons by disabling Change with Buttons if you'd like. Below guidance is from Adjust the volume on iPhone - Apple Support.

Also, check if your wife is looking at the phone while you call. This new feature called Attention Awareness will lower the volume when the camera sees the owner looking at it. Turn Attention Aware features on or off on your iPhone or iPad Pro - Apple Support

The upgrade to iOS 17 re-enabled attention aware features, and I disabled it and Face ID again, but ringtone volumes are still completely borked again since media volume now also controls ringtone volume.

Thank you for reaching out to Apple Support Communities, and we'll be happy to help in any way we can. We understand you're having issues with the volume of ringtones on iPhone. Have you tried restarting your iPhone? This simple step resolves a multitude of issues: Restart your iPhone - Apple Support

I would change the ringer to/from silent then press the up button in an attempt to increase the ringer volume but it only increases the Volume for the sound (ie; music) but NOT the Ringer. The Ringer screen would pop up but it's immediately replaced with the Volume screen.

I went to Settings>Sounds & Haptics>Ringer and Alerts and increased the slider button to max (the sound would ring very loud). I also turned ON Change with Buttons (*the volume of the ringer and alerts can be adjusted using the volume buttons) but the Ringer volume would still be low when I would make a test call.

UPDATE: After adjusting and readjusting the volume in the Settings for the ringer and turning the ringer ON/OFF on my iPhone X it suddenly began to ring normally with an incoming call. HOWEVER, the other 3 iPhone X's still have the very low ringing issue when a call comes in despite trying to fiddle with the settings as I did.

If you experience this, it's because your device is seeing you make eye contact with it, thus not needing to alert you at full volume. If you prefer to be alerted at full volume all the time, you can turn off Attention Awareness.

You may not need to go into accessibility to get around the issue - mine got lowered after restoring my settings from my previous phone and I could no longer control the ringer volume from the side buttons.

I re-enabled the ringer volume control with the side keys by going into Settings/Sounds and Haptics, and under Ringer and alerts, I enabled Change with Buttons, then raised the volume manually to the level I wanted as a default.

It seems as soon as you pick up your phone the ringer volume drops. Set your ringer volume up in settings. Put you phone on a table and call it from another phone. The ringer is loud for as long as it sits on the table. Pick it up and the volume drops down. Same thing happens when the phone is in a pocket, in a carrier, in a purse. Loud ring until you handle the phone ... then the volume drops down. Your I-Phone X senses you have handled the phone. I discovered this by trial and error. Hope it works for you!

I had same issue. But what I found is that it may actually be iPhones feature. When you are holding it in your hand the ringtone goes quiet since iPhone assumes you are already aware of the call. When placing phone on the table and calling the ring is loud. Once taken in hand it goes quiet. You should try it. Maybe its the case for you as well. Good luck and Merry Christmas

My volume issue was with the camera shutter sound. side button only takes photos when camera app is open. shutter volume is controlled by speaker phone volume or a video's volume. For whatever reason, those 3 volumes are tied together.

When you are looking at your iPhone it will ring on a low sound, but when you are not looking at it it will ring on a high sound until you see it. You can change this in Setteing > Face ID & Passcode > Attention Aware Features.

This is normal behavior and means once the phone rings, you are looking at the phone. The phone is capable of knowing you are aware it is ringing and is called "Attention Aware" which is a setting you can turn off if you'd rather your phone continue to ring at the loudest volume.

Actually this question concerns my wife's iPhone XR. She uses the "Reflection" ring tone for calls, and she thinks the phone stops ringing after three rings. It seems to me that her phone rings three times at full volume; after the third ring, the sound muffles to where it seems that the ringing has stopped.

I don't know when this issue started because I usually have it on vibrate/silent, but last night I put my phone on normal mode with the ringer set to 100% and yet when someone called me at 3am because they were in a car accident I couldn't hear it. They called me 10 times but my phone barely made a whisper. I can hear the ringtone but it sounds like its at 5% not 100%. It doesn't matter if I set it to 90 or 100, but the ringtone is very quiet.

@freeman93: I'm sorry to hear that you have encountered this issue. Please try heading to Settings > Sounds and vibration > Volume, and make sure that the Ringtone slider is at a suitable level. Now, head to the Phone app > Tap the 3 dots in the top right > Settings > Call alert and ringtone > Vibrate while ringing > On. The vibration against a flat surface can be quite loud, and can help to alert you to any incoming calls if you're asleep.

I have actually tested this on the T8210 with latest firmware and found that the sliders work just fine. The prerecorded responses are unfortunately played over the ringtone volume. This is supposedly by design.

I had the same issue of not been able to set the volume down of the home base speaker when ringing the doorbell. I found that going to the setting options- Indoor Chime- Homebase as Chime- there you can adjust the Homebase ringtone volume.

Some of my users use an external speaker puck as primary device for their phone calls. The volume they set for talking to people is too high for the ring when new calls come in. If they turn the volume setting down on the speaker to make the ringtone low, then the cannot hear the callers when answering a call. They then turn the volume up high on the speaker during their conversations. But unless they remember to turn the speaker volume down after the call, then the next ring is loud again. There needs to be a way to separate the volume for incoming ringtone from that used in a phone conversation.

Thanks for the reply @Ray_Harwood . However, we have looked into the Windows part of the equation too. The volume mixer uses the same device for the incoming ringtone as for the call itself so the issue remains the same.

in your Zoom Settings under Audio you should be able to select "Use separate audio device to play ringtone simultaneously" once they select this they should be able to adjust the volume slider for each device. They should be able to increase the external speaker volume and keep the headset volume lower or vise versa.

Thanks for the reply @JimmyOrtiz3. As I mentioned, the user is using his external speaker puck as his primary device for phone calls so lowering the volume on that will lower the volume for ringing and for the actual call. Having a secondary simultaneous ringing device would not change that

* Some people turned this Volume button adjustment feature off long ago, particularly if they have kids that like to fidget with their iPhone. But many new iPhone models ship with this feature disabled by default. Whether you want to adjust the ringtone volume by the volume buttons is a matter of personal preference and your individual usage.

I tried all of the suggestions in this tutorial and my volume is still really low took it to VERIZON and their only suggestion is to replace the phone so I will try again with anew phone and see what happens

We desperately NEED the ring volume to be LOUDER. My parents are not able to detect incoming calls when they are in the same room. It's crazy that we have to call first to tell them to call us or go look at the portal so they can see the call coming in.

Bought my 88 year old mother a Portal for Christmas; frustrated that she cannot hear the ring for incoming calls. If she sets the volume higher, the music is way too loud. Please provide an option to change the ringtone volume independently of the overall volume.

My gripe is that the outgoing ringtone is much louder than the incoming sound. It should be the other way round. You are normally sitting at the portal when you are calling someone whereas you might not in the same room when someone is calling you.

Just bought the Portal for my 87 year old mother. Love it and it works great. I agree with the comments below. She actually is hard of hearing and has the volume at the max setting. Having additional options to connect a booster device or change ring tone would be a plus. 2351a5e196
