2023 Hymn tune composition competition
Uni-Sing! won a £200 prize last year in the NUF's Dorothy Archer competition for online worship activities. We decided that we would use that money to fund a prize for this year's Dorothy Archer Competition for the best new hymn tune written in 2023. Here are the guidelines
Closing date for entries is 30 November 2023
Entrants may be any age
An entry may be submitted by one or more people i.e. a tune composed by one person or by two or more people
The competition is only open to people who are not music professionals. A music professional is here defined as anyone who earns money from composing or arranging music.
The hymn meter must be one that can be found in either the Purple or the Green hymn books.
You may tell us which words you think would suit the tune, but this is not required.
Each valid entry must be emailed to louise.rogers256@gmail.com. Louise hosts the bi-monthly, online hymn-singing session, Uni-Sing! Louise will only be administering the competition, other members of Uni-Sing! will be doing the judging.
Your submission must be sheet music (PDF if possible) accompanied by the completed covering sheet with the details of the hymn and your details. Please do not put your name on the sheet music as we are asking those judging the competition to do so without knowing the composer.
You may also send through a recording of the tune in addition to the sheet music – the melody line only please.
You may submit as many tunes as you would like.
For preference please submit tunes composed in 2023.
There is £200 available for prizes. This may go to one composer or several, depending on the quality of submissions.
