Mount Rushmore absolute location: 43.87626° N, -103.45513° E

Colossal sculpture in the Black hills of Southwestern South Dakota, U.S. It lies about 25 miles southwest of Rapid City. 10 miles northeast of Custer and just north of Custer State Park.

Relative Location:

Located just North of what is now the Custer State Park in the Black Hills National Forest, was named after the New York lawyer Charles E. Rushmore, went to Black Hills in 1885 to look at mining claims in the area.


Cultural:

Over the years Mount Rushmore has grown to be an American symbol- A symbol of freedom and hope for people of all culture's and backgrounds.

Political:

George Washington- 1st president 1732-1799. Led the colonists in American Revolutionary War to win independence from Great Britain . He was the father of a new country and laid the foundation of American democracy. Thomas Jefferson- 3rd president 1743-1826. Primary author of the declaration of independence. Inspired democracies around the world. Purchased the Louisiana territory from France in 1803, which doubled in size of our country, adding all or part of 15 present day states. Theodore Roosevelt- 26th president 1858-1919. Provided leadership when America experienced rapid economic growth as it entered the 20th century. Negotiating the construction of the panama canal, linking the east and west. Abraham Lincoln- 16th president 1809-1865. Lincoln held the nation together during the civil war. He believed the most sacred duty was the preservation of the union. Slavery must be abolished.

Place:

Is a particular area or point on Earth that has particular characteristic. Every place on Earth has a unique location physically and conceptually.

Historical:

When Charles E. Rushmore went to look at mining claims in Black Hills, he asked what the name of the nearby mountain was. The person responded it never had a name but it will now be known as Rushmore Peak. (Later known as Rushmore Mountains or Mount Rushmore). They tried to figure out who they were going to carve into the mountain. Borglum convinced Robison that it should depict George Washington and Abraham Lincoln it would give it national and local significance. Later he would add Thomas Jefferson and Theodore Roosevelt for their contributions to the birth of democracy and the growth of the U.S. Borglum identified Mount Rushmore as the desired site for the sculpture in August 1925. Carving began in 1927. Though it was dangerous no one lost their life during the completion of the carved heads. Dedication ceremony on October 31st, 1941 by Lincoln the son of Borglum who had passed in March 1941.

Economic:

The sculpting of Mount Rushmore provided economic stimulation for the Black Hill region and greatly contributed to the tourism industry in South Dakota. Tourism in Mount Rushmore creates 184.2 million dollars.

Location- Mount Rushmore is located in the Black Hills region of keystone, South Dakota. The memorial park is 1,278 acres and the actual mountain has an elevation of 5,725 above sea levels.














Mount Rushmore how people have changed it:

Many visitors who have been to Mount Rushmore before are surprised when they arrive today. From the original roadside pullout to the modern buildings, facilities have changed over time. As visitation increased they have had to expand and make improvements and expand it since the visitors has increased tremendously from what is was when it first opened. They have expanded paths, walkways, trails and restrooms because they were no longer enough for all the visitors. In the mid- 1990's they began constructions so they could accommodate 3 million people

Mount Rushmore has grown as symbol for America of freedom and hope for people from all cultures and backgrounds.


Mount Rushmore has changed overtime it needed these changes to expand for all the people. Before it did not have as many visitors as today does which is 3 million people.
