When we travel, we always love going to a local market with Fabienne. These are always very lively places that allow us to discover new flavours and see what people are buying in the country we are visiting. And on the market side we were spoiled in Riga since the central market is simply the largest covered market in Europe (when we told you that Riga was an important harbour).

You know us, we like to go for a hike in nature as soon as we have the chance. And even if traveling in winter in the northern countries is a little more complicated, we still tried to make a small excursion to the outdoors from Riga.

Self-taught web developer and passionate photographer, I love travelling and hiking for this incredible feeling of freedom they bring me. Curious, I constantly need to learn new things, to take on new challenges and I couldn't live any other way.

I share with you on this travel blog my experiences on the roads but also my thoughts to travel better while respecting our beautiful planet (which is unfortunately in a very bad shape).

The most central districts Vecriga and Centrs are the places to go for the widest selection of restaurants, though there are certainly also places to eat elsewhere in the city. There are a couple of local restaurant chains that have eateries in many different parts of Riga:

Later this summer I will be travelling with a connection in Riga. I expect the luggage to be checked straight through. We have about 10 hours between flights on the way there and 8 hours on the way back. Both times the first flight arrives in the morning and the second one leaves in the afternoon/evening.

For anyone traveling with a tent, camping is available around the country. Moreover, wild camping is legal as long as you are on government land. If you do want to stay in a campground, basic plots without electricity access at 7.50 EUR.

Latvia Travel Guide: The Best Booking ResourcesThese are my favorite companies to use when I travel. They consistently have the best deals, offer world-class customer service and great value, and overall, are better than their competitors. They are the companies I use the most and are always the starting point in my search for travel deals.

You Can Base Yourself In Riga. You can certainly road trip Latvia, and I bet that would be a wonderful experience; however, since I was traveling solo I wanted to have one base and then do Riga day trips via public transit.

One of the biggest benefits of traveling alone is having ultimate freedom over your schedule. Steal or tweak the below Latvia itinerary, which bases you in Riga and includes some incredible day trips. It includes some of the absolute best things to do in Latvia solo!

I was in Riga last month before all of this Corona happened in same Cental Hostel and visited Alberta street. It is so nice to read this travel post and remember all the fun I had. You have one more follower and hopefully we will be allowed to travel again soon.

I spent 3 nights in Riga in early May 2019, arriving from Tallinn via bus, and then travelling on to Vilnius via bus. I did fly through the Riga airport when going to Budapest from Vilnius and it seemed a well-run and pleasant airport served by the usual big airlines as well as regional ones. I attached a link below to my Trip Report that's full of details. It's definitely a town I'd return to, the 3 dinners I had there remain a very fond memory.

Riga is one of those cities that I heard about before but I could never quite imagine what it would be Hello there! Riga is an amazing city which is sadly way too underrated. If you already booked a trip, then lucky you! If not, this Guide to Riga might actually create the spark that is needed to make you book a flight and a hotel! There are plenty of things to do in Riga and I will tell them all in this Riga City Guide. Afterwards, you will know exactly what to do in Riga and I will share all of my Riga travel tips with you!

So these are all of my Riga travel tips! Of course there are still more things to see, that I might missed but I guess I got you a good overview. If you get to visit Riga and this guide to Riga was helpful to you, please let me know!

The majority of people will fly to Riga from wherever they are. From the airport it was a short 15 minute taxi ride to the Old Town which cost 20 Euros. There are taxis outside, very easy to figure out. My flight arrived at 10pm otherwise I might have looked at other options but after a day of traveling I was happy with just getting to the hotel quickly, and taxi driver was very nice and helped me with my bags.

Maybe boring but we used Lux Express to travel around the Baltics, from Tallinn, to Parnu, to Riga, to Vilnius. Cheap, comfortable and fast, our Baltic trip was brilliant -coach-trip-and-some-sea-and-air/

As we left our hotel the following morning on the way to the bus station, the first thing we noticed was the beautiful blue skies. We were starting to think the weather gods really were against us because this was not the first time we had great weather on a travel day, but rubbish weather when we were exploring a city!

Ji is the celebration of the summer solstice on the evening of June 23rd. The most important event in the Latvian calendar. Expect the cities to be empty as most people travel to the countryside for three days of partying. Girls wear flower crowns, whilst men called Jnis (John) sport crowns made of oak leaves. People drink, eat carroway cheese, sing songs and dance around a fire until the early morning.

Latvian Railway has services between Riga and all major cities like Ventspils and Liepaya, among others. International trains go to/from Moscow and across the border to Valga in Estonia. It's possible to travel between Tallinn and Riga by train via Valga. The train leaves early morning (around 7:00am) from Tallinn and arrives around 11:30am in Valga, where you can catch the onward train at 11:42am to Riga. It takes over 8 hours though, compared to just 4.5 hours by bus. There are also a few other options to check timetables, prices etc, including the Latvian Passenger Trains website and the excellent 1188.lv website.

Buses travel to and from Riga from almost anywhere in the country, including the major cities and more regional off the beaten track towns. Eurolines has buses to and from Vilnius and Tallinn in Estonia.

I can give any traveller a piece of advice concerning weekend planning in Riga.

Weekend planning is the most interesting thing I can even imagine because I follow all the entertainment opportunities which is popular in this city at the present moment.

Usually I make routes - travel destinations from point A to point B by using a Tripcheat meta-search site (It helps to make the route directly on the city road map, in such a way people can't get lost if they will follow the created route).

This place is intensely moving and should be a top priority to visit for any traveler to Latvia. This place once housed a police prison and labour correctional camp. They deported Jewish people from Germany, Austria, and Czechoslovakia here. They also sent civilians and former military members of Latvia, Lithuania, and estonia here as well. They did not care if it was men, women, or children and 20,000 souls found themselves here working heavy labour in extreme winter conditions of the Baltics causing illness, starvation and some of the most inhumane conditions.

However if you have four people or less, renting a car may be a better option, especially if the people you are traveling with have a similar traveling style that you do. If they like to go slow, make random stops, are ok changing their itinerary at moments notice then taking a car may be a good idea.
