The idea for this bike crash detection system emerged from the need to improve rider safety, especially on long or solo rides where help might not be immediately available. Inspired by car crash detection features in modern vehicles, the project was developed using affordable, widely available components like the Arduino, MPU6050 sensor, SIM800L, and NEO-6M GPS. Through multiple stages of prototyping, testing, and refining the crash detection and alert functions, the system evolved into a reliable device that can automatically notify emergency contacts with the rider’s real-time location, helping to speed up rescue efforts and potentially save lives.
Our team successfully built a working bike crash detection system that uses sensors to detect accidents and instantly sends GPS location alerts via SMS. We’re most proud of integrating the NEO-6M GPS module for accurate location tracking and getting the SIM800L to reliably send messages after a crash. Recently, we also completed a compact 3D-printed enclosure design to protect the electronics and make the system easy to mount on a bike. Testing on real bikes has shown promising results, bringing us closer to making rides much safer.
