Hello, Texas!

May 6

Today I crossed the state line into Texas and the Central Time Zone. I'm making progress.

I'll always remember New Mexico for its breathtaking beauty, and also its winds, challenging terrain and fires. I went through some trials there. It's good to be moving on. Today's 78-mile route from Tucumcari, New Mexico, to Vega, Texas, was wonderfully uneventful. It once again included riding about 20 miles on the Interstate 40 shoulder. Almost all of the rest of the route was on frontage roads alongside the interstate, so it was never far away.

The route also went through Adrian, Texas, the midpoint on Route 66 between Chicago and Los Angeles. I met up again with George and Greg. We took turns taking each other's pictures with the Adrian sign, above. I won't be taking Route 66 all the way to Chicago — I'll be turning off at St. Louis — but close enough.

Tomorrow, I'm riding through Amarillo and staying near Conway, Texas.
