Carvings

Hi, I'm Richard Finch! I am a retired engraver and full time bird carver. The majority of my work is life sized, carved in tupelo (a swamp wood) and painted with oil. All parts of the carvings from the habitat to the eyes are made by me.

Having an interest in birds for as far back as I remember, when I saw a carving of a bird, I was fascinated and knew I had to try it. The first attempt was a sparrow that looked pretty rough so I knew I had to get more information and the right tools to improve. My first competition was a mall show and I did quite well so I looked into competing in the world show I entered two pieces in the novice class and won first and second best of show. So the next year, and full of myself, I skipped intermediate and went straight to the open where the prize money was awarded. Needless to say, it was years before I won any prize money.
