Angry Sea
I made this capture in Atlantic City in 2010. The gray day provided little color, so I converted it to a sepia-toned black and white. Note the gull taking it all in at the left side of the frame. This photo won an Honorable Mention at a Monroe Camera Club competition.

Taking a Taste
While visiting Laguna Beach, California, I spotted this Allen’s hummingbird feeding on the nectar of the aloe vera plant.

Climbing Through Shawsville
Shawsville, Virginia is a small town west of Roanoke along the Norfolk Southern Railway (ex-Norfolk & Western). A small cemetery there provides a good vantage point to watch the trains assault the Blue Ridge. Here a westbound mixed freight charges forward, powered by 8,400 horsepower from diesel locomotives representing both General Electric and General Motors.

Solitude
I was waiting to photograph a train along Conrail’s (ex-Pennsylvania Railroad) Freehold Branch, which skirts Thompson Park here in Monroe. In the distance, I noticed someone approaching, walking along the tracks. Using the rails as a leading line, I composed this image that later won an award at a Cranbury Digital Camera Club competition.

Given Up
Spotting this abandoned homestead near Boone, North Caroline. I knew I had to turn the car around to make a photo. The failing light at the end of the day only added to the gloom associated with giving up on a dream. This photo was part of an exhibition, “Nature vs. the Built World,” hung at the Plainsboro Library by Greenbriar resident Wayne Baruch.

Black Skimmer Skimming
These awesome birds feed by flying along the water’s surface with their longer lower mandible skimming the water. Upon striking a fish, the bill snaps shut, capturing the meal. I made this image at the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge near Atlantic City.

Time to Awake
I spotted this common egret one evening at one of the ponds in the Greenbriar community. It appeared that he was roosting for the night. Before dawn the next morning, I approached his tree and waited for the sky to brighten. Pushing the camera’s sensor to its limits, I made this photo.

The famous lighthouse in Racho Palos Verdes, California was photographed from a walkway within a public park.

This ship was outbound from the Port of Los Angeles. I photographed it under a very interesting sky from Redondo Beach.

Rocky Mountaineer near Banff
After riding this classic tourist train from Vancouver, British Columbia to Banff, Alberta, I took my rental car out the next morning to get one photo of the train as it returned westbound. After grabbing a “safety” shot at the station as the passengers boarded, I headed out into unfamiliar territory looking for a good spot. When I drove upon this scene, I knew I most likely wouldn’t find anything better. The lake, framed by trees, the mountains in the distance, and the clouds just beginning to lift all served to dwarf the train while making abundantly clear why it runs.

Storm Coming
While traveling to see Devil’s Tower in Wyoming, a storm rolled in. The wind had begun to whip when I stepped out of the car to frame this image.

Mother’s Day Rose
I was carrying the rose my wife had received for Mother’s Day to my basement studio when I passed through a shaft of sunlight coming through a window. I was so struck by the light that I feared I wouldn’t be able to do anything better using my studio lights. So I prepared the set up in the light beam. In post-processing, I used layer stacking to simulate HDR treatment.

White Ibis in Flight
A visit to the rookeries in Ocean City, New Jersey, has become a new spring-time tradition. During the 2024 trip, I captured this white ibis in flight with the marshes serving as backdrop.

Who says still life subjects cannot have movement? I mixed electronic flash and the light from a spotlight in this studio image. The spotlight allowed the bishop to register several times in a long exposure.
