Who is a School Counselor?

A School Counselor works with all students and is part of the educational team. A school counselor works to create a proactive program that engages students in the areas of: academic, social/emotional, and career exploration and growth. School Counselors meet with students individually, in groups, and in classrooms.

The school counseling program consists of Direct student services which include: the school counseling core curriculum ( classroom instruction, group activities), individual student planning, responsive services (counseling [short term, goal-focused. School counselors do not provide therapy], crisis response). The school Counseling program consists of Indirect student services which include: consultation, collaboration, and referrals.

Why Middle School Counselors? Middle school students are in the midst of rapid physical growth, they have a growing curiosity about the world and an emerging self-identity. Middle School Counselors can help support students during this time by helping to create a safe, respectful learning environment in collaboration with parents, other educators, and the community. Through proactive programs school counselors help to promote academic, career, and social/emotional development. School counselors support career exploration and goal setting through the Individual Learning Plan Program allowing students to begin to make the connections between school and career.
