About Orthodontic treatment
Orthodontic treatment provides important benefits when started at an early age as well as later in life. In children and adolescents, early intervention helps guide proper jaw growth, correct developing malocclusions, and create adequate space for erupting permanent teeth, which may reduce the need for complex treatments in the future. It can also help eliminate harmful oral habits and improve facial balance during growth. In adults, orthodontic treatment improves dental alignment and smile aesthetics, which enhances confidence and overall appearance. Properly aligned teeth are easier to maintain, helping to reduce the risk of dental caries, periodontal disease, abnormal tooth wear, and improving overall oral function.
Orthodontic treatment usually takes 12 to 24 months, but the exact time depends on the type of braces (prescription) used and how complex the case is
Fixed Orthodontic Treatment (Braces):
Fixed orthodontics uses braces that are attached to the teeth and cannot be removed by the patient. These braces gently move the teeth into the correct position over time. They are very effective for treating complex alignment problems and bite issues. Since they stay in place, they work continuously, giving more precise results. Regular dental visits are needed for adjustments.
Removable Orthodontic Treatment (Aligners/Plates):
Removable orthodontics includes appliances that patients can take out, such as clear aligners or plates. They are mainly used for mild to moderate tooth alignment problems. These are more comfortable and easier to clean, as you can remove them while eating or brushing. However, they must be worn as advised (usually most of the day) to be effective. Patient cooperation plays a very important role in their success.
Different types of Braces/Brackets:
Very effective for all types of tooth alignment issues
Strong and durable (less chance of breakage)
More affordable compared to other options
Suitable for complex orthodontic cases
Faster results in some mlid to moderate cases
Visible (less aesthetic)
May cause initial mild irritation
Requires good oral hygiene and regular cleaning
Less visible – blends with natural tooth colour
More aesthetic than metal braces
Effective for mild to moderate orthodontic problems
Suitable for adults and image-conscious patients
Little More expensive than metal braces
Can stain (especially elastics) with tea, coffee, or smoking
Slightly more fragile – may chip or break
Can cause a bit more friction, sometimes slowing treatment slightly
Less pain & pressure
Faster appointments
Easier cleaning
Fewer visits
More natural tooth movement: less friction.
Higher cost: Usually more expensive than traditional braces.
Visible metal brackets
Nearly invisible
Removable
More comfortable
Better oral hygiene
Fewer clinic visits
Needs discipline – Must wear 20–22 hours daily for best results
Not for all cases – Very complex teeth problems may still need braces
Cost – More expensive than traditional braces.
Corrects jaw growth early
Reduces need for surgery later.
Improves facial profile.
Better bite function.
May reduce future treatment time.
Works best only in growing children
Needs patient cooperation: Must be worn regularly.
Initial discomfort
Visible and bulky
Takes time to see results
Orthodontic retention is the final phase after braces or aligners, where your teeth are kept in their new, correct positions. Retainers are special appliances (removable or fixed) that help prevent teeth from shifting back to their original place. Wearing your retainer as advised by your orthodontist is essential to maintain your new smile for life.
Removable orthodontic retainers are custom-made appliances worn after braces to keep your teeth in their new, correct position.
They can be easily taken out for eating, brushing, and cleaning, making them convenient to use. Wearing them regularly as advised by your orthodontist helps prevent teeth from shifting back over time.
Fixed orthodontic retainers are thin wires bonded to the back of your teeth after braces are removed. They help keep your teeth in their new position and prevent them from shifting back over time. Since they stay in place permanently, you don’t have to remember to wear them, but good cleaning is very important.
