In early 2000, Escuela Secundaria Técnica México (ESTM) Drum Corps was founded in the Corozal District of Belize under the leadership of director/teacher Carey McCalla. This small band has proudly represented the school, a rural public institution, in numerous parades and community events, especially performing in local carnival competitions during the September celebrations.
In 2012, under the same visionary direction of Carey McCalla, the drum corps transformed into a marching band. Their first participation in the Belize Bandfest was as a showcase, without competing. By 2017, they achieved third place in the competition, and in 2018 they were recognized as the most improved band. In 2023, following the COVID-19 pandemic, the band won first place at the Belize Bandfest. At that time, both Director Carey McCalla and Director Denzel Omir Charley worked together to prepare the band. In June 2023, the band suffered the loss of its first director, Mr. Carey McCalla, a musical legend whose legacy lives on through the sounds and performances of the ESTM Ambassadors. Each time the band marches, it honors his memory by carrying with it the rhythm, harmony, and unity he helped forge.
Currently, Director Denzel Omir Charley leads the Ambassadors Marching Band, composed of 67 musicians and dancers, comprised of students and alumni of the Escuela Secundaria Técnica México. The Ambassadors Marching Band has had the honor of participating in parades and performances in both Chetumal, Quintana Roo, Mexico, and Melchor de Mencos, Guatemala. Our goal is to be true ambassadors of the marching band, both in Belize and internationally. We work as a team, with a community spirit, to create performances that combine cultural, Latin, and marching band music. We aspire to continue growing, nourished by the feedback of judges and peers.
