The 2022 Racing Kings 1440 Open Championship has completed with several interesting turns of events. The 2021 winner decided to not play in this rendition and has potentially set sights on retiring from Racing Kings entirely! The 2021 runner-up was eliminated in the quarterfinals and the current world champion was eliminated in the semi-finals! A tournament with 9 players among the top 20 rated in the world ends in an incredible fashion with an unexpected victor rising from the group to take the trophy home.
An incredible tournament from 5th seeded Luka3916 ends wonderfully with an unexpectedly dominated final series. Luka3916's road to the finals began with a close victory of 2-1 (4-2) over Peanutbutter12345. Following this, a dominant match in the first round of the knockout portion of the tournament over LearningVariants resulted in facing the 2021 runner-up vlad_00 in the quarterfinals. This match was expected to be tight and potentially go into tie-breakers, but Luka3916 had won 2-1 (4-2) ending the short series as it was. His toughest opponent was met in the semifinals in CyberShredder, the current racing kings world champion, in which Luka3916 had yet another surprising upset victory of 2-1 (4-2). The final match of ten games was up against Natso, one of the RKWC tournament directors, in which the series swiftly ended 3.5 - 1.5 (6-3) without needing a tenth game. Incredible tournament from Luka3916 to very deservedly win this Racing Kings 1440 Open Championship.
And just like that, we're underway! The first round has seen two completed matches out of the six just three days after starting. An additional forfeit occurred as well marking the halfway mark of the first stage of the tournament! Excitement has occurred as we've seen the promising Danish elite Luka3916 win the first series of his tournament over a returning young talent in Peanutbutter12345. In other news, the previous year's runner-up (and most likely to win this tournament) vlad_00 established prowess in the field with a convincing sweep over LearningVariants, a potential underdog for the future tournament. With about four days left to see the first stage matches, many are curious to see the current world champion CyberShredder play his match as his recent absence in racing kings (among other top RK players) has stirred commotion in the Racing Kings community.
Although we did not see many expected names such as RoyalManiac, IMakeManyMistakes, mdfl_efea, or seth_7777777 enter this tournament, we still have a very promising field to provide great entertainment, competition, clever moves, and learning moments! Newer elite players such as huangyudong, civil_2000, and mc-queen-098 have joined. We also see one of the RKWC tournament directors, Natso, playing! This is a event that is highly encouraged to stay tuned about as we're likely to see some really great games!
Although it's a little late, the second Racing Kings 1440 Open Championship ever is underway! The battle for the trophy to the left begins in just a few weeks!
Now, what exactly is the RK1440 OC? It's simply a tournament among Racing Kings players to play racing kings without opening theory in randomized starting positions to test who has the deepest understanding of the game itself.
Here's a quick recap of the first RK1440 OC:
In the 2021 rendition, we saw the 2019 & 2020 Racing Kings World Champion reign victorious by the end. The format was a double elimination tournament from the top 8 forward. This allowed for RoyalManiac to be beaten in the quarter-finals but still make it to the finals and exact revenge upon vlad_00.
This year's format is a very different format compared to last year's. The format of matches is the same, being 3+2 timed and matches of 6-games (3 positions) up to the 10-game (5 positions) final. This year is yet another two-stage tournament, but has no double-elimination and no second chances! The first stage is a single round and is simple random pairing to decide the seeding of players into the second round. The second round is purely single-elimination. While this may cause some controversy, unwanted pairings, and potential early high stakes match-ups, it is designed to be a quicker, simpler, and more exciting format than the first!
So, who are we expecting to return in this year's format? Of course we are likely to see the 2021 RK1440 OC winner, RoyalManiac defend his title and gain headway going into the 2022 RKWC. We are also likely to see the 2021 Racing Kings World Champion, CyberShredder fight for this title! Looking for revenge, the atomic legend and 2021 runner-up, vlad_00 has also prematurely stated his entrance! Other likely candidates for the title are IMakeManyMistakes, mdfl_efea, and many others!
