The University is located at Santiniketan, founded by Rabindranath Tagore in 1921. The University is divided into Institutes, Centres, Bhavanas and Schools. Besides basic educations, it carries its traditions with its glorious cultural heritage as well as art and dance education inspired by Rabindranath Tagore.
The Department was initiated with an undergraduate course in Botany (Hons) in 1964. Post graduate course in Botany was later introduced in 1967. From the session 2011-12, the Deartment has introduced new Choice-Based Credit System (CBCS) of curriculum under Semester system. Presently the Department offer eight special papers and have 20 sanctioned post of faculties having specialization in different branches of Botany. Research facility in the Department has been created out of different grants received during the last few years (Approximately 450 Lakhs during the last 10 years). The Department is presently recognized as UGC-DRS Phase II and DST-FIST Phase II Department. In addition individual faculty members have received projects sanctioned by different National funding agencies (e.g., UGC, CSIR, DST, DBT, SERB, BSI, WB-DST etc.). Faculties are working in diverse fields of Biological Sciences like Plant and Microbial Diversity, Environmental Botany, Aerobiology, Plant Physiology, Cytogenetics, Tissue Culture and Plant Biotechnology, molecular Biology and Applied and Industrial Microbiology and has published about 250 papers in reputed International and National Journals. Faculty members of the department as recognition of their work in the respective field have received several prestigious awards from International and National organizations [For example: Alaxender von Humboldt Research Fellowship, Max Planck Post Doctoral Fellowship, Germany, Raman Post Doctoral Fellowship, UGC, INSA Exchange Fellowship (Hungary) etc.]. Collaborative research work has been initiated with several Universities and Institutes in India. Majority of the passed out students are well established with some posted at reputed academic positions in India and abroad.
