At Retrace, your privacy and data security are our highest priorities. This Privacy Policy explains how we handle your data, especially the sensitive information that passes through your clipboard.
1. What Data We Collect & Where It Goes
Your Clipboard Data is Local: Every single piece of text, link, and snippet you copy is stored locally on your device. Retrace does not transmit, upload, or share your clipboard contents with our servers or any third parties. Your data is yours.
Anonymous Analytics & Crash Reports: To help us improve the app and fix bugs, we use Google Firebase Analytics and Firebase Crashlytics.
We log anonymous events (like when a clip is successfully saved to your history) to understand app usage.
We collect anonymous crash reports to fix stability issues.
None of your actual copied text or personally identifiable information (PII) is ever attached to these analytics or crash logs.
2. Why We Need Special Permissions
Because of Android's system security regarding background processes, Retrace requires two specific Android permissions to function:
Accessibility Service: We use this service strictly to detect the system "Copied" notification triggers. This tells Retrace when a new copy action happens. We do not read your screen, we do not record your keystrokes, and we do not interact with other apps.
Display Over Other Apps (Overlay): When the Accessibility Service detects a copy event, Retrace uses a brief, invisible overlay window to securely access the Android Clipboard API in the background and save it to your local database.
These permissions are used exclusively for the core functionality of background clipboard tracking and for absolutely nothing else.
3. Sensitive Content
Retrace respects Android's standard EXTRA_IS_SENSITIVE flags. If you copy a password from a modern password manager that properly flags their content as sensitive, Retrace acknowledges that flag and prevents unauthorized access to that specific clipboard payload, logging it safely.
4. Changes to This Policy
We may update our Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new Privacy Policy within the app or on this page.
