Abramo, Mary
Mary Abramo, age 94, of Belmont, MA and Santa Ana, passed away unexpectedly on May 4, 2020. Born in Somerville and raised in Waltham, the daughter of Joseph and Theresa Abramo. Beloved sister of Alma LaFauci, Nicholas and Anthony Abramo. Survived by a niece and many nephews, in addition to grandnieces and nephews. Dearly loved by her brother-in-law Nicholas LaFauci and his wife, Sylvia.
Mary was among the first women graduates of Northeastern University in Boston, MA, where she earned a Bachelor's degree in Journalism and a Master's degree in Education. Mary began her teaching career in 1956 at the Plympton School in Waltham, MA. Her sense of adventure soon had her packing her bags for France, where she taught English and social studies for the Army Dependents' School.
When Mary arrived in France, the first thing she did was to buy a car, which she filled with friends for trips all across Europe. She had no hesitation driving through the mountains, villages, and cities. It was all an adventure to her. When she returned to the United States, she once again packed up her car and headed to California, where she taught French and English in Tustin, CA at the UTT Intermediate and Red Hill elementary schools.
Mary boasted that her students were always respectful and that she set a good example for them by never chewing gum. After school each day, Mary and her teacher friends would head to happy hour - not for the drinks, but for the free appetizers, which were usually her dinner, as cooking was never her strength. One evening, she won a horse in a bar raffle. She declined the horse and took the cash payout.
Upon retiring from teaching for 32 years, she packed her car once again and drove back to Massachusetts, where she settled in Belmont, close to her family, including her beloved nephews. She was known as "Auntie" to everyone in her life, which she loved.
She was an accomplished bridge player (or at least her dear friends helped her believe she was). A regular at the Belmont Public Library, she loved to read the Boston Globe each day and excelled at the daily crossword. A fiercely independent woman, she lived her life exactly to her wishes.
Her family loved to tease her because no one actually ever heard her speak French. She never took the bait. So, whether she really spoke French remains one of the great family mysteries. -- Au revoir, Auntie..
Donations in Mary's memory can be made to The Greater Boston Food Bank, Attn: Accounting, 70 South Bay Avenue Boston, MA 02118.

Because of the war, he had only one year of schooling in Italy, but the Watertown School System placed him in grade six. He did not speak English and sat in the back of the room looking at the encyclopedias. That experience hardened his resolve to become a life-long learner and a master of languages. Adolph became the publisher of Branden Books, an old respected Boston publishing house and edited and published many books there, including The Straw Obelisk (WWII novel), Tuskegee Airmen (the first definitive documentary of Black pilots in WWII), Water and Life (poems in Italian and English), Boy Destined to America (an autobiography), Weston Veterans of WWI and II (co-authored with his wife Margaret), and many others purchased by colleges and universities.
He also started an online school for Italian language and cultural learning called Dante University. He was a member of the Knights of Malta and a frequent speaker at ceremonies in his hometown of Weston and other places.

Collins, Catherine C.
Catherine C. (Whyte) Collins - 70, of Marshfield and former longtime resident of Waltham and Watertown passed away peacefully at home on the morning of May 29, 2020 following a lengthy and courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. She was the beloved wife of the late James F. Collins, who predeceased her in 2011.
Cathy was born in Brighton, MA on July 21, 1949, the daughter of the late John P. and Mary (Bowes) Whyte. The youngest of 7 children, she grew up in Watertown and was a graduate of Watertown High School. Cathy was employed for many years as an administrative assistant for the US Army Corps of Engineers and US Fish and Wildlife. Upon her retirement, she truly enjoyed her work with the Waltham Public School Dept. as a special needs classroom aide at South Middle School and later as a media aide at the McDevitt Middle School.
Cathy loved spending summers in Marshfield’s Green Harbor, where she vacationed as a child in her family’s summer home. The tradition carried on as she and Jim rented a house each year with her sisters and all of their kids, resulting in countless family memories and stories that will span generations. Cathy was a sun goddess and would always kick off any family vacation by sitting in her beach chair to “get some color,” which more often than not resulted in an awful sunburn. This never deterred her from getting a great tan for the summer.
She loved to teach people, entertain and dance, so naturally a short-lived career as a line dance instructor was inevitable. She bought herself a boombox and cowgirl boots and taught for several years. She was an avid knitter, never said no to a nice cup of tea and loved to cook for her family, often arriving to holiday parties with arms full of trays of her famous lasagna or cookies.
She never hesitated to volunteer her time to help others and was a member of the Waltham Centennial Scholarship Foundation for many years. She assisted in collecting recipes for their annual fundraising and to her credit, not one member of her family is lacking a “What’s Cooking in Waltham” cookbook. She was so proud to have been invited to a special event where she was honored by the committee with a Certificate of Appreciation in 2019.
In the fall of 2016, Cathy’s lifelong dream of taking permanent residence in Marshfield became a reality and she moved into her home in Green Harbor. She was thrilled to call Marshfield her home and became active in the senior center and in the knitting group in her parish. The people she met there would become very important, close friends to her and she treasured the relationships she shared with them.
Of all her life’s endeavors, becoming a grandmother encompassed some of the proudest moments in life. She adored her grandchildren more than anything in the world and they truly gave her joy in her final days despite her illness.
Cathy was the devoted mother of James F. Collins, Jr. and his wife Sara of Scituate and Sean Collins and Sabra Towne of Marshfield. Cherished grandmother of Johnathan, Alice and Makayla; and Scott and Isabelle.
Loving sister of John P. Whyte, Jr. of PA (late wife Marie), Betty Ferren (husband Tom) of CA and the late Mary Sullivan (husband Don), Margaret “Peggy” Kearsley (late husband Wayne), Joan Roy (late partner Bill Zebal) and William Whyte (wife Mary Ellen.) sister-in-law in law of Ronald Collins of GA. She was survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Collins, Elizabeth
Elizabeth Collins had an impeccable reputation at Waltham High School for the 37 years she taught as a member of the Social Studies department. Her kindness was mentioned by so many of her co-workers and former students. She began her years in Waltham in September, 1970 and retired 38 years later. At her retirement dinner staff and several former students spoke about the profound effect she had on so many young lives. Memorably, former student Paul LeBlanc, the President of Southern New Hampshire University, traveled back to Waltham to surprise her that night and shared his admiration for her exemplary teaching, as well as the human values she embodied and transmitted to the young men and women of her classes.
Elizabeth created the Psychology course at WHS and was the primary reason for it flourishing as one the most respected and popular courses at the school. As Norm MacDonald recently said, "No one ever had a bad word about Elizabeth for all the years she taught." Others remembered her attending extra-curricular sporting events each year to show her students her support. She also served annually on the scholarship committee and was known for particularly representing needy seniors who would most benefit a boost financially.
Miss Collins will be long remembered.

David, Janet -- February 22, 2020
Janet P. (Serino) David, of Waltham, died at home on Saturday, February 22, 2020. She was 77. Prior to her death Janet wrote her own obituary...the way she wishes to be remembered.
I was born in Cambridge on March 17, 1942. Nana Serino always called me Janita, we had to have Italian names! Since my sister was called Marianna and my brother Tomasio, it made sense to me. When I was about 10 years old I asked my mother where my first name came from [obviously the Patricia came from my birth date]. She said "it was one of dad's old girlfriends."
In the early '60's I met the love of my life, Armen, who soon became my best friend, my partner, my lover, my biggest fan and the best husband and Dad ever. We were married in Scituate on August 29, 1965, and lived happily ever after until his death on October 18, 2013. I don't want anyone to think I lived in a make-believe world; it wasn't all peaches n' cream. There were hard days, mostly good days, healthy days, not-so-healthy days, struggles that all loving couples go through but our love was strong always. Armen brought with him two amazing children, John and Karen, who added love and laughter to our lives. To all those people who insisted on calling Karen and John my step children and Josh and Paul my real children, I'll repeat what I have always said to you in the past, shut your mouth and think before you speak. In 1972, Joshua Michael was born and in 1974, Paul Armenag, was born. Josh and Paul have been an absolute joy to raise -- they completed our family of six. The best part is that I see so much of their Dad in each of the four now grown up children.
I am a strong believer in a life on the other side. During difficult hospitalizations, I reassured my children that if I died I would be with family and friends who love me as much as I love them. If I lived, the outcome was the same. It is sort of a win-win for me. As I begin my journey home, I will be with the love of my life, along with friends and family who have gone before me.
I leave behind to celebrate my life, my children and grandchildren and great grandchildren. Josh, his children Bella, Niko and Sophia, his supportive wife, Robin and her girls, Madison and Sydney; Paul, his beautiful wife, Alicia and their children, Hunter, Owen and Alanah; John, his lovely wife, Carol and their son, Christopher; and Karen, her husband, Peter and their children Nina, Samantha and Derek plus Nina's three children, Drayden, Jacob, and Tessa and Samantha's daughter Willa. Mary, Frankie and Katie DeBlasio are our "adopted" grandchildren who have been a gift from heaven that keeps on giving to this day. Each of them has brought love and laughter to my life and for that I say, "Thank you!"
I take the role of godparent seriously. I leave behind Derek David Monson, my godson and grandson, who has brought laughter, joy and love to my life. I am very proud of you, Derek. Also my goddaughter and niece Alyssa Serino who is pure love and joy and the most giving person ever. You are a blessing, Alyssa. Then there is my godson and nephew John Christian Flynn, who has always made me proud of the man he is today and the great dad he has become. To all my nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews, I love you from the bottom of my heart.
Where I went to school, where I lived or where I worked isn't important. What is important is that I loved and received love from my family and friends.
Thank you all for making my heart happy. Please keep my family in your prayers. And one final request for everyone. Please do not wear black or brown or dark blue for my going home celebration. Instead wear colorful, comfortable [especially shoes because I will be buried in my favorite sneakers] and if you have something purple to wear, that would be even better. Remember, I will be watching.
As I begin my journey home, I hope I'll be remembered as a good daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend. I love you Josh, Paul, Karen and John with all my heart. And to my grandkids I say one more time -- I love you all around the world and back again.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund [JDRF], 60 Walnut Street, Wellesley, MA 02481, in honor of my courageous and amazing great niece, Abby Pike.

Obituary from The Joyce Funeral Home
Johnson, Donna, Assistant Principal at Plympton
Donna Hope Johnson died on Sunday, January 19, 2020, at her home in Manomet, Massachusetts, after a long battle with cancer. Born July 1, 1946, in Worcester, Massachusetts, to Hope (Thulin) and Eric Alfred Johnson she spent most of her childhood and adult life in Waltham. After graduating from Waltham High School, she earned her BA in Early Childhood Education from Wheelock College. She taught first grade at the Bright School in Waltham for 28 years before moving over to the Plympton School as an Assistant Principal until her retirement in 2005. She received her Masters of Arts in Teaching from Tufts University. Donna was drawn to politics at an early age and remembered watching the first televised Presidential convention. She merged her political energy and dedication to public education with likeminded peers who argued that the National Education Association did not adequately represent their views and helped form the Republican Educators of Massachusetts. In 1988, she was a Massachusetts state delegate at the Republican Convention that nominated George H. Bush. As a child, Donna spent summers in Manomet at her parents’ camp overlooking Rabbit Pond. She and her three sisters enjoyed summers at Churchill Landing beach. When nieces and nephews arrived in the 1970s and 80s, many of them spent the entire summer under her care. She loved being on the water. When a nephew needed a summer job, her father bought a boat so that they could trap lobsters. On one trip, the propeller became tangled and started to swamp the boat. That harrowing experience prompted her to take a Coast Guard Auxiliary course in safety and seamanship. She also took classes in Celestial Navigation with the United States Power Squadrons (USPS) and went on to teach Basic Seamanship Safety Courses. She continued her involvement with USPS and became the first woman appointed a District Commander in District 12 of USPS. Despite her accomplishments, her love for family was her priority. From summers in Manomet to winters in a two-room schoolhouse in Maine with four generations of skiers, she brought family together. Donna was a member of the First Baptist Church in Waltham before moving to Manomet. She then joined the Second Church of Plymouth serving terms as chair of the diaconate, chair of the trustees, and helping with the Youth Group. She was also a member of the Second Church’s Bible Study group, the Massachusetts Retired Teachers, The Pilgrim Hall Museum, Plymouth Antiquarian Society, Plymouth Garden Club and the Plymouth Republican Town Committee. Donna is survived by her two sisters, Carla Garrison and her husband Ritchie, and Gail Browne and her husband Remi. Auntie Donna referred to her nieces and nephews as her kids. By order of birth, they are: Mark Beaumont, his wife Pim and their daughter Jade; Kristen (Beaumont), her husband Christopher Reimann, and their daughters Ruby and Klara; Eric Garrison; John Beaumont, his wife Abby and their children Otto and Matilda; Nathan Garrison; Rebecca Garrison, her husband Josh Grubman and their children Quinn and Henry; Christie Browne; and Ben Browne. Her parents and elder sister Ruth (Johnson) Beaumont predeceased her. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Cranberry Hospice or Second Church of Plymouth.
Johnson, James
James “Jim” Johnson, 74, of South Yarmouth, MA, formerly of Lexington, MA, passed away on July 30, 2020 after a brief and sudden illness. Jim was born in Auburn, MA and attended Northeastern University where he earned degrees in education. As a four-letter athlete in his class at Auburn High School, Jim followed his lifelong passion for sports by becoming a physical education teacher in Billerica, MA. There, he met his wife of 42 years, Mary Beth. Jim later worked at the middle school level in the Waltham School District in the positions of physical education and special education instructor. He completed his teaching career in Waltham, returning to physical education at the elementary level.
Snow days were never an option for Jim. When it snowed, he was at the wheel of his plow, clearing driveways and shoveling out doorway paths for many neighbors in the Lexington area. He was always accompanied by one of his faithful Labs.
Jim was a tireless worker, buying and managing rental properties from the north shore to the south shore and everywhere in between. Right out of college, he obtained his real estate license and dove right into selling and buying properties. Early on, he owned and rented homes and apartment buildings; later, he concentrated on business properties in the metro west area, closer to home.
Jim had a great love of family and enjoyed annual family trips with Steve and Kristen to Disney World and Aruba. Later, he and Mary Beth enjoyed trips to Longboat Key, FL and Naples, FL to visit friends and family. They had a vacation booked at Longboat Key this past April, but it was postponed until 2021 because of Covid-19. Jim was a creature of habit; he believed that if you found a place you liked, you went back there!
Jim coached youth softball and baseball teams, providing all of the players (not just his own) with skills and experiences that would serve them well in later life. He coached Steve’s baseball teams all the way through high school and into American Legion Baseball. Years later, many of his players would continue to call him “Coach” whenever they saw him. He loved that. Most days on the Cape, you would see Jim sporting the Y-D Red Sox hat. He loved attending the Cape Cod League games.
One of Jim’s favorite investments was owning and operating the Edge of the Sea Motel from 1978 to 1998. He and his partner, Tom, shared some great memories those early years. Once Mary Beth entered the picture, Jim and Tom amicably dissolved the partnership, for as Tom said, Jim had a new partner. As a small beachfront property, guests were particular about which room or cottage they wanted, and year after year they returned. Jim was always there to greet them upon their arrival and say goodbye at their departure. The year of Hurricane Bob, a number of guests chose to stay, without power, and helped sweep sand or do other things to get the motel back in shape. Returning guests were like extended family. A familiar sight for many guests was the “Jim stance”: arms crossed, legs shoulder width apart standing in the driveway looking out over the property. Like clockwork, you would find Jim taking time off from work every day to join his family on the beach for a swim break. He would take his kids…and the kids that mysteriously appeared in line… and catapult them sky high into the ocean. It was a daily ritual.
On his day off, Jim would take the family and drive onto Sandy Neck Beach in Sandwich for a day’s outing. His love of the ocean prompted him to buy a Sea Ray. He loved taking the boat out. Some early mornings, he and Brian (manager) would venture to Martha’s Vineyard for coffee before starting the workday. He enjoyed inviting friends to accompany the family on all-day excursions. There are numerous stories about Jim and that boat. Once he went aground just off a private island in West Yarmouth. After mentioning a certain name, the property caretaker came around the bend with a tugboat to pull him off the sand. That made for an adventure that took on added dimensions through the years. In later years, Linda managed the property for Jim to be able to have “family time.” Nothing was more important to him.
Shortly after retirement, Jim was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. It came as a shock that someone so physically active would develop difficulty with balance and walking. He staved off symptoms by participating in Parkinson’s programs and studies at Boston University, boxing at the first Rock Steady in the surrounding Boston area, and going to NH for LSVT BIG and LOUD. He even went to Boynton Beach, FL one year, for a month, to try a gym that sported a piece of equipment called Giger MD and participate in the the LSVT BIG and LOUD programs. At that time, this was the closest location to MA for the LSVT programs.
In 2017, Jim and Mary Beth retired to Cape Cod, a familiar and happy place for them. Here, Jim joined the first spin class at the YMCA and was part of the “gold seat” group for his tenure in the program! He also was in the first Rock Steady program on the Cape at Spaulding in Sandwich. Later, he continued boxing at Forte Fitness in Hyannis. The exercise and camaraderie he received from each of these programs was outstanding. The dedication and genuine care he (and all his buddies) received from the coaches of these three programs is admirable. Any program is only as good as those who lead it. He loved being part of a group and was distraught when Covid 19 prevented him from participating. Early on, he was nicknamed “Big Jim,” not only because of his stature, but because of his big personality. No matter what music Coach Bob played at the spin class, Jim always called out that it was the Monkees. There were many head shakes and snickers from his buddies. Jim’s sense of humor was contagious. He valued the MANY new friendships he made with his fellow boxers, spinners, and coaches. It was a lifesaver for him to have these connections.
Jim leaves behind a family whose many joys would have been impossible without him. That is quite a legacy to have and remember. He left this earth before those who loved him were ready to say goodbye. He gave all who knew him memories too fun, too beautiful, too distinctly Jim to forget.
Jim is survived by his loving wife Mary Beth, his children Steve and Kristen, his son-in-law Bill, his grandson Liam, his brother Ken and fiancée Gwen, his brother-in-law Bill, his nieces and nephews Lisa, Kim, Maggie, Johanna, Graham, and Jonathan, great nieces and nephews Ryan, Kelsey, Nicole, Hailee, Tommy, Maddie, and Isla as well as many other loved family members and friends.

Arthur served his country with pride as a member of the U.S. Navy from 1951 to 1955, aboard the USS Wallace Lind Destroyer. His service during this time remained one of the proudest accomplishments of his life, and he often spoke with honor about his time in the Navy.
After his military service, Arthur returned to Waltham, where he became a well-loved custodian at Waltham Public Schools, serving for over 29 years. His kindness and generosity touched the lives of countless children and families. Even long after his retirement, former students and colleagues would often approach Arthur and his family, sharing stories of how he discreetly helped those in need, including providing lunch money to children who had none.
Arthur’s love for his community extended beyond his job. Living in the Chester Brook apartment complex, Arthur saw a need for a place where local children could play. Without hesitation, he rallied a group of teenage boys and led the effort to clear a field behind the complex, ensuring there was space for little league practices and games, for them to play baseball. He also coached little league.
A dedicated provider, Arthur worked multiple jobs throughout his life to support his family. Despite his busy schedule, he always prioritized spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Arthur’s favorite times were the annual family trips to York Beach, Maine. Rather than relaxing on the sand, Arthur stood watch at the shoreline, always ensuring the safety of his children and their friends as they played in the waves.
In his later years, Arthur found joy in gardening and playing golf, though nothing brought him more happiness than his family. He often spoke of them with immense pride, calling them his greatest achievement.

Lombardi, Jr., Salvatore M.
On Tuesday, September 27, Salvatore Michael Lombardi Jr., a loving husband of fifty five years and father of two, passed away peacefully at the age of seventy-seven. He was comforted and surrounded by those he loved; his family and friends.
Sal was born in 1944 in Brooklyn, New York to Salvatore and Ethel Lombardi and raised in Ansonia, Connecticut. He was a proud graduate of Notre Dame High School of New Haven, Connecticut. He earned an Associates degree in Culinary Arts from the Culinary Institute of America and an undergraduate degree in Business from the University of Bridgeport, Bridegport, Connecticut
Though trained to be a chef, his culinary career was cut short with his decision that the cooking lifestyle was not conducive to his standards of being a father and husband. He put his knowledge and skills learned from his culinary training and Business degree together and made a thirty three year career ,from which he retired, as a School Lunch Director for Waltham Public Schools, For fourteen years, he also shared ownership of the Carvel Ice Cream store in Chelmsford with his beloved wife. His cooking passion and prowess were left to be shared with friends and family.
Sal’s heart had no limits when it came to sharing and giving. He wanted to share experiences that connected all of us. His passion for music, theater, dance and movies was endless and he was always on the lookout for something new or moving. He found no better joy than sharing these forms of human expression with his friends and attending concerts, shows or movies with them.
Sal gave you his full attention and would always make the most simple of things special. Due to his culinary prowess, food was an obvious thing to give and share and he did so in abundance. His family and many friends enjoyed many gourmet experiences of food and wine. He routinely would prepare meals designed with leftovers so that he could pre-package meals for friends in need.
Sal was a constant seeker of spirituality and the common elements of humanity that connect us regardless of culture, race, religion and lifestyle. He was a strong believer in social justice who put belief into action. Holidays and gatherings were inclusive experiences of family and friends, always a celebration of diversity and bringing people together. It was not uncommon to find an unknown guest at a meal or celebration whom Sal had met and invited to join. The invited guest, though entering as a stranger, would leave as a friend.
His seeking led him to the First Parish Church of Groton and the Unitarian Universalist principles. He was an active member in the congregation, on committees, leading worship,, preparing food for events, supporting teens in the Mentor Program, and supporting social justice initiatives
He was a lifelong learner who consistently sought out opportunities for personal growth. After retirement he found a second career which tied together his love for cooking and his love of people. He started as a substitute teacher and eventually landed a position as a Culinary Teacher. This was a true calling, a blending of his skills, passions and beliefs. The excitement of teaching and encouraging students was observable as he spoke of his teaching experiences and connections with students. The positive impact on students was evident with the many that reached out to him thanking him for his support and encouragement.
All in all, he incorporated the best of being a father and a grandfather, the best of being a husband, the best of being a man and the best of being a human. He was by no means perfect, and certainly had his faults as we all do, but it was his constant desire, effort to try to be the best person he could be; to be kind, to give and to love.
Sal is survived by the love of his life, his college sweetheart, Diane, his son Bryan and daughter-in- law Rebecca, his daughter Karen, his five grandchildren; Will, Olivia, Jake, Abraham and Shehla, his sister’s Isabella and Josephine, nephews Jon and Scott and niece Wendy.

MacArthur, G. Lorne
Mr. G. Lorne MacArthur, longtime principal of Waltham's Kennedy Middle School, died Wednesday, July 14, 2021, at his home following a period of declining health. He was 93.
Born in Waltham on June 8, 1928, he was a son of the late Gordon G. and Helen J. (Milligan) MacArthur and had been a lifelong resident.
He lived in the Cedarwood neighborhood all his life and would often recall a happy moment from his youth when, in October 1936, he saw President Franklin Roosevelt as he passed the 'Cedarwood Gates' in a motorcade enroute from Boston to Worcester to give a speech during the 1936 presidential campaign where Roosevelt decisively defeated Kansas Governor Alfred Landon.
Lorne was a 1947 Waltham High graduate where he excelled in academics and on the football, hockey, and baseball teams. A natural leader, he served as president of his sophomore, junior, and senior classes. He continued his studies at Northeastern University and at Boston University where he earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in education.
During the Korean War he served in Germany as a member of the Counterintelligence Corps along the border between East and West Germany. While in Germany he continued his passion for playing hockey as a member of the Bayreuth team and led the West German League in scoring during the 1952/53 season. He also taught in the American schools for military dependents.
It was also in Germany that he met his bride, Luise Prechtel, and following their marriage and return home to the States the pair made Waltham their home.
In 1954 Lorne began his teaching career at Waltham High School and three years later was named assistant principal at Waltham's Junior High School on School Street. In 1958 he was named to the same position at South Junior High School and in 1961 at Kennedy Junior High School.
In 1970 he took over the top position at Kennedy where he remained principal until his retirement twenty years later. It was at Kennedy where Lorne left his mark on a generation of students and teachers and made many lifelong friendships.
Known as a 'principal with principles', honesty, fair dealing and humor were his constant companions. If one were to make 'Mr. MacArthur' upset or angry it was a stove one touched but once. He demanded excellence from himself and from those around him.
A year after his retirement Lorne established the 'Bavarian Wurstwagen' . . . his well-known and sought-after hot dog cart where he and Luise entertained customers with good food and good conversation. A hallmark of the experience was a heaping portion of Luise's authentic sauerkraut on the dogs.
By then Luise's years long struggle with multiple sclerosis had become a daily challenge but with dogged determination and constant smiles the couple ventured out . . . a chore sometimes, but one that was an ever-present reminder of the love and devotion they'd shared for decades.
Aside from his work in academia he was active in local politics and various civic organizations, including the Waltham City Council where he served as a councilor-at-large for several years in the 1990's.
A man of many interests, talents, and hobbies, he loved long distance swimming, belonging to the Joseph F. Hill American Legion Post No. 156 and its Legion Band, and authored his own book and illustrated many others on educational topics. Lorne was also a member of the Waltham Triad Lodge, A.F. & A.M. and the PFC John M. Sullivan USMC Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 10334 in Waltham.
He leaves his children, Heidi J. Sardina (Michael) of Wayland and Christine L. Kelleher (James) of Waltham; his grandchildren, Katie J. Pinto, Michael J., Michelle L., and Christopher L. Kelleher and his great-granddaughter, Isabella Pinto.
Memorial donations may be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, 101A 1st Avenue, Waltham, MA 02451. www.nationalmssociety.org/Chapters/MAM

She could always count on her brother and sister in-laws, nieces and nephews throughout her life. Russ, Sallie, August 1, 1942 — August 29, 2025
It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Sarah Ellen (Sallie) Russ on Friday, August 29th, at the Mary Ann Morse Healthcare Center in Natick, Massachusetts. Born on August 1, 1942, in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, Sallie graduated from Bethlehem Catholic High School in 1960 and Kutztown State University in 1965. She moved to Massachusetts in 1968 and taught in the Waltham schools for the next 32 years. Using humor, discipline, and empathy, Sallie motivated her students and had a profound influence on their lives. Many of her former students maintained contact with her throughout the years, and the refrigerator and bulletin boards in her Natick kitchen were covered with their family pictures. This reflected the remarkable bond that existed with her students.
Sallie was a woman of many talents and interests. She received good grades in college while working as a waitress in the dining hall and performed in plays and musicals in high school and college. She was a formidable tennis player but was sadly lacking when it came to scoring points in the annual Fourth of July bocce tournament held by the family of her friend of 70 years on the Cape. Sallie, however, proudly displayed her yearly last place ribbon in a place of honor in her living room. A voracious reader, she kept a meticulous record of the books she read to invariably announce that "she didn't like the way it ended" and proceed to describe the correct outcome.
Sallie was a fashion icon. No event was too trivial not to warrant a stylish ensemble, accessorized to the hilt. She loved bright colors, purple being her favorite, and with her height and stature, was always attired in "a classy and in vogue" manner. Although appearing very expensive, Sallie prided herself in never paying full price for her "fashion finds."
She cared deeply about people and always rooted for the underdog, both in sports and in life. Not one to sit on the sidelines, Sallie supported the teachers' union throughout the years and acquired training in order to become certified to monitor a suicide hotline in Waltham. Everyone mattered to Sallie, no matter what their station in life, and she always displayed respect and compassion toward everyone she encountered. She cherished her many friendships, from her pals of 50 years to the workers at Stop & Shop, her gas station, and her bank, to whom she sent cards on their birthdays and inquired about their families.
A major testimony to her generosity and compassion was her commitment to the Big Sister Program, which she joined at the age of 27. Her little sister-to-be was 7 at the time. They were an integral part of each other's lives for the next 55 years, and when Sheila said goodbye to Sallie, she thanked her for being her mother, big sister, and best friend, adding "I probably wouldn't be here right now if it hadn't been for you."
Sallie was the daughter of the late William and Sallie (Mellon) Russ and was predeceased by her brother William Russ, brother-in-law Barry Mindler, and nephew Barry Mindler, Jr. She is survived by her sister Anne Mindler, and her beloved sister-in-law Terri Russ, a niece Tina Thomas, a nephew Michael Russ, and her great-nephew Ryan Thomas and great-niece Sarah Russ, all of Pennsylvania.
Sallie did not have an easy life, but she comported herself with grace, dignity, and humor and epitomized a feisty, proud, Irish redhead. She worked hard, offered no excuses, and inspired others to be better people. If you were lucky enough to have Sallie as a friend, then you were blessed to have someone who would always have your back.
Contributions in her name to St. Jude Children's Hospital https://www.stjude.org or MSPCA https://www.mspca.org would be greatly appreciated. (obituary from Joyce Funeral Home, Waltham, MA)

Spice, Michael
On Sunday, September 19, 2021, Michael G. Spice, loving husband to Marie (San Soucie) Spice of 39 years, passed away peacefully at the age of 77, following a short battle with cancer.
Mike was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana on March 17, 1944 a son of the late George and Mary (Drewett) Spice. Raised and educated in Fort Wayne, he was a 1962 graduate of Northside High School, and served his country honorably in the United States Air Force.
After the Air Force, which brought him to Chicopee, MA, he got a job with Honeywell International. He met his first wife, Carol, and they had two sons, Michael and Mathew.
Mike would eventually settle in Waltham, the place he called home for more than four decades. Here, while working at W.H. Nichols, Michael met his wife, Marie San Soucie. The two married in Waltham and had their son Jarrod. He soon started his own company, Mr. Mom's Cleaning Service, which he owned and operated until his retirement.
After retiring from his business, he became a school crossing guard for the Whittemore School for 15 years, where you would find him in the rain, heat, snow and even when he wasn't feeling well, because he loved seeing the kids! If he wasn't busy getting the kids to and from school safely, he was on his front porch just enjoying the neighborhood.
He really enjoyed being part of the community and loved staying active in his son's activities. He was able to do both during the many seasons coaching baseball down at Nipper Maher Park. The family also made many happy memories and friends during their time spent at Westward Shores Camp in Ossipee, New Hampshire.

Watts, Sang
Sang Watts, after a courageous fight with pancreatic cancer, entered the kingdom of heaven on Wednesday, May 19th, 2021. Our beloved Sang died in her home; she was 67 years old. Sang fought pancreatic cancer with strength, positivity, grace and most importantly with a smile. Sang’s journey became a source of inspiration for others to hold onto hope and to always find the light within the darkness.
Sang had this extremely warm energy about her. Everyone who knew her and even those who did not directly know her, commented on the light she brought into this world. Sang could be compared to a local celebrity, almost everywhere she went, there was always someone filled with joy to see her. Sang will be remembered for her smile that could light up a room, her laugh, her positivity, her loving, caring personality, and her perseverance. Sang loved being by the water and being outside, exercising, going for morning walks, shopping at Kohls, TJ Maxx, and Target, practicing yoga and meditation, doing sudoku puzzles, and spending time with her family and friends.
Sang was born on February 7, 1954 in Oxford, Mississippi. She met her husband, Michael Watts, while he was attending Ole Miss University and they later married on December 22, 1978 in her home town of Oxford. Michael's journey in the Navy led them to settle in Boston, where together they raised two loving children, Dion and Ivy. Sang was a Teacher’s Aid for Pre-School in the Waltham Public School System for 15 years. She continued working during the pandemic and was working on starting her retirement in June of this year. Sang worked with hundreds of students, many of whom remember her for her kindness and positivity.
Sang was the type of person who could start a chant of “Sang Strong” at the Pancreatic Cancer Purple Stride Walk, and have strangers join in, which led her to creating lifelong friends. Sang was the type of person who walked the halls of the hospital the day after an incredibly tough Whipple surgery and became admired by all, being called a “dream patient”. She was the type of person who always told it to you straight, but told it to you with love and a smile. She was the type of person who loved hard, showed up for those around her, and poured herself into everything she did. She provided compassion beyond words to her family, friends and students she worked with, always knowing the right words to say.
Sang lived a life to be admired. After being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in September 2019, she didn’t let it get her down, instead she decided to fight. Sang fought an incredibly tough battle of chemo, surgeries and hospital stays and yet she always stayed positive and strong. She was the epitome of pushing through tough times with grace. Sang would want us all to celebrate her life, to continue on with her positivity and her smile in all that we do and to remember all of the good times, laughs and many hugs we all shared with her. She would want us to be comforted in knowing that she is finally at peace, and with her Heavenly Father, as well as loved ones who have passed before her. Sang’s spirit, warmth, energy and love will be with all of us forever and will forever remain in our hearts - just keep looking out for purple in your life. She is everywhere.
Sang is survived by her husband, Michael and their children, Dion Watts and Ivy Watts-Calixte, her son-in law, David Calixte, her siblings Jimmy Brown (Lois Ann), Shirley Gipson (Glen), Paula Brown, Sarah Brown, and Lois Davis (Eddie); her in-laws Mary Watts (Noel), Patricia Watts-Gordon (Charles), Thelma Watts, Robert Watts (Karen), and Jim Watts (Toni); she is also survived by nieces and nephews, cousins, and countless, countless friends who all adored her.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Sang’s name can be made to Pancreatic Cancer Action Network to help fight for a cure and improved outcomes for Pancreatic Cancer. Just like a bath and a half, Sang wanted nothing less! https://secure.pancan.org/site/TR?
We will forever be Sang Strong!!!
