About

What do we need?

Not only interaction with intelligent machines, but also socialization and collaboration with brilliant humans.

Psychology, Cognitive Science, Linguistics, Computer Science, Mathematics, Artificial Intelligence ... Ph.D. students in Computational Linguistics come from different backgrounds. Interpersonal communication and interaction particularly provides a shortcut for students to get familiar with multidisciplinary expertise. We believe sharing 3 days together can open up a deeper level of dialogue and a better understanding towards some mystery in this field.

What else do we need?

A true relaxation and a change of perspective.

Academia is a long ride, but not just under the ceiling. Sometimes we need an escape from our office as much as we need a cup of coffee after meals. That’s why we organize this off-campus stay in an isolated volcanic area, which will allow us to be exposed to the nature, ease our nerves and mitigate our stress. In addition to this massage in the physical level, we believe that a more casual atmosphere will also help us to visualize problems from different perspectives and gain new insights into our projects.

What else?

Hmmm, attention is all we need: in particular, opportunities to share our work and experience.

We encourage students to give lively and wild talks about their academic interests or their current research project, and we will also have some invited speakers/mentors which already "survived" the PhD and can share with us their experience during and after the PhD.  Attention is all we need from each other. No matter if we are sitting on the grass or lying on the chair, the idea is to ensure that students can share what they find fascinating, pay attention to what others find interesting, and feel free to give feedback, comments and to express their own (research) ideas. By obtaining a big-picture view of the ongoing research around us, we may find intersection (∩) where to jump in and collaborate, at the same time it is also hard to resist a bigger union (∪) for simply widening our horizons.
