Sexual Assault Treatment Units (SATU) offer free care to individuals over the age of 14 who have been raped or sexually assaulted. Health check services include injury assessment and treatment, STI testing and treatment, emergency contraception and an optional Forensic exam. The forensic exam involves collection of samples that can be used as evidence. The forensic exam must be conducted within 7 days of an incident and SATUs can store forensic samples for up to a year if you need time to decide whether to report the assault. If the assault occurred more than 7 days ago, forensic evidence can no longer be collected but injuries can be assessed and documented if you decided to report the incident to the Gardaí.
*Please note this service is only confidential for individuals over 18. By law any incidences of rape or sexual assault in the case of minors (under 18) must be reported to TULSA and the Gardaí.
