Resource Hacker is a free resource editing tool for Microsoft Windows PC computers and laptops on both 32-bit and 64-bit operating systems. Developed and released by Angus Johnson, Resource Hacker is a lightweight application that does not take up a lot of storage space on PC devices. The freeware does not contain built-in advertisements or notifications.

You can view and edit resources in executables: .dll, .exe, .scr, etc. Resource Hacker lets you compile resource libraries: .mui, .res, etc. The command line lets you easily compile and decompile resources. You can either compile an active resource script file or one that you create by using the Resource Hacker editor. There are further features of the script compiler.

The resource files will be displayed as image resources or decompiled characters. While you cannot edit binary images in Resource Hacker, the software can easily export and import media that has been altered by an external picture editor. Binary resources with an unknown composition will be shown as readable binary text. You can view any resource as read-only.

Restorator and Resource Tuner are comparable apps that edit Windows resources. They all have almost identical user interfaces that include similar command-line functions. User experience for Restorator, Resource Tuner, and Resource Hacker is based on a GUI structure. The utility tools are all primarily made for Windows PC computers and laptops. The platforms mentioned earlier are light.

Resource Hacker (also known as ResHacker or ResHack) is a free resource extraction utility and resource compiler for Windows developed by Angus Johnson. Resource Hacker is a free program that allows you to view, modify, rename, delete, and export resources embedded into an executable file. These resources include icons, menus, dialogs, sounds, strings, and other binary objects such as embedded files. Using Resource Hacker, you can export these embedded files into invidual files that can be analyzed or update existing resources with new ones. This allows you as a developer to modify your executable's resources without recompiling the entire program.

Resource Hacker is a freeware utility to view, modify, rename, add, delete and extract resources in 32bit & 64bit Windows executables and resource files (*.res). It incorporates an internal resource script compiler and decompiler and works on all (Win95 - Win7) Windows operating systems.

Viewing Resources: Cursor, Icon, Bitmap, GIF, AVI, and JPG resource images can be viewed. WAV and MIDI audio resources can be played. Menus, Dialogs, MessageTables, StringTables, Accelerators, Delphi Forms, and VersionInfo resources can be viewed as decompiled resource scripts. Menus and Dialogs can also be viewed as they would appear in a running application.

Saving Resources: Resources can be saved as image files (*.ico, *.bmp etc), as script files (*.rc), as binary resource files (*.res), or as untyped binary files (*.bin).

Modifying Resources: Resources can be modified by replacing the resource with a resource located in another file (*.ico, *.bmp, *.res etc) or by using the internal resource script compiler (for menus, dialogs etc). Dialog controls can also be visually moved and/or resized by clicking and dragging the respective dialog controls prior to recompiling with the internal compiler.

Adding Resources: Resources can be added to an application by copying them from external resource files (*.res).

Deleting Resources: Most compilers add resources into applications which are never used by the application. Removing unused resources can reduce an application's size.

Please note this tool is no longer maintained, but it was the only freely available tool I tried that could let me correctly extract the XML resource and re-import it. If you know of others that work let me know.

Moreover, before working with Resource Hacker, users of x64 Windows are highly advised to read the article @

Figured it out. I did a full install, took the files from the install folder and put them in a new folder, then created a file in that folder named reshacker.ini. With that file in place, Resource Hacker runs portably, writing settings to it. Thanks to Ennovy for mentioning the ini file and giving me the idea to try that. If anyone else has this problem, try that.

According to resource hacker help you are suppose to wrap these with double quotes. Doing this though that command line fails which stops further Resource Hacker commands if you have any. The error states something about the action doesn't exist or something to that extent. What action? No idea.

1: You must now explicitly Open AND Save the executable. You were doing that before but it's reworked now so there is more you have to add to the command.

2: For DELETING you have to use the actual command "-action" then followed by the action in this specific case Delete. "- action delete"

3: You have to tell Resource Hacker the Mask. I don't really know what that is but it seems to be the name of the resource like ICON or ICONGROUP followed by the name of the group like 99 or 164. There are THREE comma's you have to use in the Mask but only Two are used. I don't know what the third one is for but if you don't add the third comma it doesn't work.

I agree with you, and I usually run, with around 1.4 GB of free space, on Drive C:. Due to Microsoft Windows 10 Home, 64-bit, with current updates, my free space moves around greatly. I have SanDisk X400 M.2 2280 128GB, as my Drive C:, with a Western Digital HGST Travelstar HTS721010A9E630 1 TB Internal HDD, as Drive D:. I try and install, all programs, to Drive D:. It is difficult, to manage the used space, on Drive C:. I try and keep, Microsoft Windows 10 Home, Tobii Technology, and Skpe, only on Drive C:. I have also installed, Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2016, on Drive C:, and it was installed, by Microsoft, knowing my desires, for Drive C:.

I am using Resource Hacker as a tool to extract out resources like icon, images, etc. from .dll or .exe file. In addition, I am using it to crack some small Windows application. However, it does not work with all Win32 Application, especially with those that are zipped by .exe compressor. e24fc04721
