What is Resilience?

Resilience is the outcome of a process of capacity building by which individuals and groups are able to step back and recover from a disturbance and activate processes of renewal in order to continue towards health and wellbeing,

It refers to the ability of an individual, family, organization, or community to make cultural adaptations to challenges of living in a changing world, where human ecological and social self-identity has to be reconfigured for living sustainably.

It is an ongoing condition that requires time and effort and engages people in taking a number of steps to enhance their response to adverse circumstances.

Resilience implies that after an event, a person or community may not only be able to cope and recover, but also change to reflect different priorities arising from the experience and prepare for the next difficult situation. It s an ecological property of humankind and related to how cultural systems of health and wellbeing respond to a disturbance or stressor. In rough terms, the more resilient a system is, the larger a disturbance it can handle.
