It was a movement that made the transition from the feudalism system to the mercantilist system and eventually to capitalism.That movement, which lasted from 1789 to 1799, is called the French Revolution. With this movement came some drastic changes in the everyday life of the French people. They were soon to face persecution at the hands of their king who attempted to put a reign of terror on them. His crackdown included the guillotine, and some of the most brutal torture that ever occurred in history.To be able to evaluate your understanding of the French Revolution you should be familiar with the terms used. In essence, they are commonly referred to as the 'enlightenment'. The more common term is the 'Enlightenment,' but a better term would be the 'Enlightenment Phenomenon' or simply 'Phenomenon.'Despite their differences, both the British and American revolutionary experience was based on the same ideas. The government of France under Louis XIV had separated the power of the monarch from the power of the people. As a result, the popular classes began to enjoy the privilege and the amenities that the monarchy denied to the peasants. The King's power began to diminish and eventually his last breath was held by his daughter and heir to the throne, Marie Antoinette.She managed to use her position to continue the line of the Royal Family through her husband, Napoleon III, and her son, Joseph II.
