Quick Answer: How to Order Authors in Research Papers

The correct order of authors in a research paper typically reflects contribution level. The first author did the most work, while the last author is often the senior researcher or supervisor. Middle authors contributed less but still significantly.

However, rules can vary by discipline, journal guidelines, and collaboration agreements—so understanding the nuances is essential.

Why This Matters (And What Happens If You Get It Wrong)

Incorrect authorship order isn’t just a formatting issue—it can seriously impact your academic future.

Many researchers underestimate this—and end up paying the price later. That’s why getting it right from the start is crucial.
