Key Market Trends
One of the major trends in the offshore wind power market is the increasing adoption of floating wind technology. Fixed structures currently dominate because of their established technology, ease of operation, and cost-effectiveness. However, floating structures are expected to experience significant growth as developers move toward deeper waters where conventional fixed foundations are less suitable.
Water depth is another important market trend. Installations in waters up to 30 meters currently account for a major share because shallow-water projects are comparatively easier to construct and require lower capital expenditure. However, Fortune Business Insights expects the market to increasingly shift toward installations exceeding 30 meters. The above-30-meter segment accounted for approximately 30% of installed capacity in 2018 and was expected to approach 50% as floating offshore wind investments increased.
The market is also moving toward larger and more powerful turbines. While 3 MW to 5 MW turbines have been widely adopted because of their established technology and cost-effectiveness, turbines exceeding 5 MW are expected to gain substantial momentum. Larger turbines can improve energy production and project economics, particularly for deeper-water and floating offshore installations.
Regional Market Analysis
Europe has historically been a major offshore wind power market because of its established infrastructure, renewable-energy investments, and supportive policies. The region generated approximately 25% of its electricity from wind power, according to Fortune Business Insights. The U.K., Germany, Denmark, Belgium, the Netherlands, and France have been important offshore wind markets.
Asia Pacific is expected to demonstrate strong growth, supported by large-scale offshore wind projects, investment activity, and government initiatives promoting renewable energy. China has emerged as a particularly important market. Fortune Business Insights states that China installed approximately 40% of the world's offshore wind power in 2018, supported by a substantial pipeline of projects.
North America, particularly the U.S., is also expected to expand significantly. Federal and state policies, incentives, regulations, and increasing investment in renewable energy are supporting offshore wind development. Japan is another emerging market, with growth supported by floating wind investments, government support, and increasing demand for clean energy.
Market Drivers
The primary factors driving the offshore wind power market include the growing demand for renewable energy, increasing electricity consumption, supportive government policies, and technological advancements. Countries are increasingly focusing on clean-energy sources to meet sustainability and emissions-reduction objectives.
Technological development is particularly important because improved turbines, installation technologies, and energy-efficient solutions are helping lower project costs and increase electricity generation. The development of larger turbines and floating platforms is also expanding the potential geographic footprint of offshore wind projects.
Competitive Landscape
The offshore wind power market is described by Fortune Business Insights as highly fragmented, with numerous global companies competing across turbine technology, equipment, and related solutions. Key companies profiled include Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy, MHI Vestas Offshore Wind, Senvion, Adwen, ABB, General Electric, Ming Yang Smart Energy, Nordex, Goldwind, Envision Energy, Suzlon Energy, and Hitachi.
Conclusion
The offshore wind power market is positioned for strong long-term expansion as countries accelerate renewable-energy deployment and invest in large-scale offshore projects. The transition toward deeper waters, floating foundations, and higher-capacity turbines is expected to reshape the industry. With the global market projected to reach 293.00 GW by 2032 at a 19.16% CAGR, offshore wind power is expected to remain an important technology for meeting growing electricity demand and renewable-energy objectives.
