I issued an open call to 6 classes in the math department for art which depicts an important and challenging math concept in a way that helps viewers gain some understanding of the concept. The winning entries were displayed at a “Mathematical Art Exhibition” gallery viewing event, which was a public event advertised to the broader Lehman community and beyond. Link to photos from the exhibition. The materials, food, and awards for this prize were funded by a National Science Foundation LEAPS grant.
I took my MAT 313 students on a field trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art (the Met) in Manhattan, acting as a mathematical tour guide, with a heavy focus on art outside of the western canon. 10 students attended, and one brought her toddler. Link to photos from the art museum trip.
