René Ballesteros is a dedicated heritage conservationist, community engagement professional, and fundraiser, whose work is deeply informed by his upbringing in the Rio Grande Valley borderlands between Monterrey, Mexico, and McAllen, Texas. His academic background includes a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology with a minor in Environmental Studies from the University of Texas Pan-American, and a Masters of Liberal Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies with a concentration in Anthropology, and subdisciplines in History and Mexican-American Studies, from the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.
René's commitment to public history is highlighted by his extensive service at the Museum of South Texas History (MOSTHistory) in Edinburg. From 2009 to 2023, he held multiple roles, advancing from a gallery host and docent to the Programs and Events Officer and, finally, the Community Engagement Officer.
He currently serves as the Development Manager for Latinos in Heritage Conservation (LHC), a national nonprofit, where he previously worked as the Community Engagement Fellow in spring 2023. René also holds leadership roles in regional history as the head of the Publicity Committee for the Hidalgo County Historical Commission and has contributed nationally as a member of the American Association of State and Local History’s Educators and Interpreters Committee. An avid cyclist, he previously applied his civic interest to serving on the Rio Grande Valley Metropolitan Planning Organization’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Action Committee.
