Vision
As regenerative medicine increasingly shifts toward integrated strategies to address the challenges of an aging society, there is growing demand to develop innovative therapies grounded in a deep understanding of the aging environment—laying the foundation for a future of healthy longevity. In response to this emerging paradigm, leading researchers at KAIST with distinctive strengths in aging and regenerative medicine have joined forces with top experts across Korea to establish the Regenerative Medicine Research Institute for Aging-Related Diseases (reMRI), envisioned as a national strategic hub for regenerative medicine.
The reMRI will focus on developing next-generation regenerative technologies based on precise control of the aging environment, while cultivating interdisciplinary talent with convergent expertise. Through these efforts, the reMRI aims to address the pressing challenges of a super-aging society and strengthen national bio-sovereignty in the rapidly evolving bioeconomy.
Goal
The reMRI defines aging as both a key constraint in the design of regenerative medicine and a biologically modifiable variable. Moving beyond conventional regenerative approaches—such as dietary supplementation or the transplantation of exogenous cells—the center aims to establish the scientific foundation for next-generation regenerative technologies that precisely control the aging microenvironment. The ultimate goal is to develop practical therapeutic solutions for age-related diseases that remain effective even in aged physiological conditions.
Expected Outcomes
The reMRI will adopt an independent research model based on postdoctoral fellowships to cultivate independent researchers and industry leaders equipped with interdisciplinary expertise spanning aging and regenerative technologies. By establishing an industry–academia–hospital collaborative research ecosystem, where university-driven foundational technologies, hospital-based clinical data, and industry market insights coexist, the reMRI aims to position itself at the forefront of developing a global standard platform for regenerative medicine technologies targeting aging-related conditions.
