The International Genealogical Center (IGC), the largest genealogical company in Russia and the countries of the former USSR, presents its leading specialist and one of the oldest employees of the historian-archivist Petr Rempel. Special historical and archival education and 35 years of experience allow Peter to work effectively with archival funds and documents of the 15th-20th centuries, freely read cursive, successfully find and analyze historical information. He performs the most complex and non-obvious archival investigations, including those based on incomplete and indirect source data.
With its help, we find information and documents about almost every person who lived on the territory of the Russian Empire, the USSR and Eastern Europe over the past 300 years, often over 400 and in some cases over 500 years. Petr works throughout Russia, as well as in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe, the Caucasus and Central Asia.
With the participation of Petr Rempel, the IGC implemented unique projects related to various ethnic and class groups of the population, territories, historical events, processes and phenomena. The fate of the Greeks, Bulgarians and Armenians who fled from the Ottoman Empire, the families of German colonists and their ancestors before leaving for Russia, the history of the families of the peoples of the Caucasus were studied. Searches were carried out related to the development of the "Wild Field" and Siberia, the colonization of the North and Central Asia, the construction of monasteries. The fates of the missing, victims of terror, conflicts and wars were revealed; the fate of persons "crossed out" from the history of the family, biological ancestors. In the course of the work, the complex and dramatic history of the Jewish people was restored: the history of the dynasties of merchants and artisans, merchants and petty bourgeois, cantonists and revolutionaries, victims of pogroms and the Holocaust, and emigrants. There were many other complex and non-trivial projects.
In addition to archival work, Petr is engaged in searches on the ground: interviewing old-timers, localizing disappeared objects of settlements, buildings, camps, burials, professional photo and video recording, collecting and attributing artifacts, compiling maps and plans. Petr is a participant and organizer of dozens of research trips, business trips and expeditions, including those to remote and hard-to-reach areas.
During his work in the company, Petr has established himself as a creative and proactive an employee who constantly improves his skills. He made a huge contribution to promotion of research projects and popularization of genealogy as an industry historical science. Among the professional and personal qualities of Petr Rempel, one can note decency and responsibility, perseverance in achieving goals, readiness for experiments and non-traditional algorithms for solving problems. Working with Peter is easy and comfortable.
Our company is grateful to Petr Rempel for successful cooperation. We can confidently recommend him as a highly qualified specialist.

I have been working together for many years with Peter Rempel. I know him as an experienced, talented and thoughtful archival researcher. This is a professional of the highest class, capable of solving search problems of any degree of complexity. There are only a few such specialists. Working with him is always interesting, he is result-oriented and knows how to achieve results.
My great-grandfather Ivan Ermakov lived at the end of XIX – beginning of the XX century. His life was surrounded by mysteries and puzzles, and very little was known about it. His daughters left one-sided and contradictory memories of him. I have asked family history investigator Mr. Peter Rempel to try to shed light on his life story. Mr. Rempel conducted an investigation in many Russian archives and, like a detective, he was able to reconstruct the extraordinary and dramatic life path of my great-grandfather Ivan. He came from a peasant family and was recruited as a soldier. After his army service he made an astonishing career in Astrakhan, both before and after the Bolshevik revolution. He became the second person in the Astrakhan gubernia (province) after the governor, investigated and fought widespread criminal practices at the province administration, faced and repelled false accusations and at some point even threatened the governor and demanded compensation from his administration. Even more remarkable was his life in the early Soviet time. Despite his pre-revolution career, he became a trusted member of the local Soviet administration, and he even met Stalin and Kalinin in person concerning Astrakhan district matters. Peter Rempel has revealed many details and first-hand documentary evidence of this uncommon life story. He has also traced the life paths of Ivan’s ancestors over 400 years, starting from the 16th century, and found among other their grievance letters which tell about their household, disobedience to authorities, aspirations and worries. These ancestors, who have long been forgotten, became for me lively characters with their own personalities. Mr. Rempel has described all his findings in a thick nice book (in Russian), which guides the reader through my family history. I am very thankful to him for this!

We knew next to nothing about our ancestors as our grandfather didn’t really talk about them and our dad couldn't give much information. We assumed that all documents had vanished during WWII. BUT! Pyotr was able to successfully restore the entire lineage from the end of the 18th century till the present day - with various documents on where and how our ancestors lived, what they did, etc. He unearthed authentic documents, such as statements by my great-grandfather and great-great-grandfather, in which they describe the circumstances of their lives. He also found the place where their house stood (it was burned down during the war). We even have a German reconnaissance aerial photo, showing the houses before the fire and the remains of buildings afterwards.
Pyotr also found evidence surrounding the circumstances of the death of our relatives in the Vitebsk ghetto. All this has been made possible thanks to the amazing work he did in the archives of Moscow, Minsk and Vitebsk. So when we decided to make Aliyah, we had all the documents necessary for the consulate.
Thanks to Peter Rempel, I learned the amazing story of my ancestors on my father’s side, who lived in the 18th-19th centuries in the Voronezh province.
In the Russian Historical Archive and the Archive of Ancient Acts, Peter found documents, a detailed investigation of the tragic event in which my family took part. We are talking about the uprising of Ukrainian peasants in 1766, who did not want to lose their freedom and obey the demands of Count Buturlin. Thanks to Peter, I also learned how my ancestors, through incredible difficulties, managed to pay off the count and became free even before the abolition of serfdom in 1861. Many documents were found, from which the real story emerged; it was possible to imagine how these people lived, what they dreamed of, what they knew and were able to do.
I thank Peter for the most interesting materials, which provided a lot of information that was important for my entire family.

Peter Rempel researched the history of my ancestors for 500 years! I set the task of studying my history as deeply as possible and creating a description-portrait of each of my ancestors. The work took several years, but I wanted to get exactly the result I needed! Peter not only restored the names and dates of life of my ancestors who lived many centuries ago, but found documents about the events of their lives. The story turned out to be unusual and fascinating. I saw how the history of my ancestors is woven into the history of Russia! Peter works unusually carefully and thoroughly; this happens very rarely now.
