ARTIST STATEMENT
REMAINS is a site-specific contemporary theatre performance set on Pender Island, BC, Canada, utilizing mixed mediums such as film, sound and land-art about traces left behind. "Can you really leave no trace behind?" is a central question that the performance makers explored, opting to integrate the use of film to showcase the context of what occurred at the site before the audience arrives at the film location, which had been manipulated to showcase the aftermath of what happened. The medium of using photography and videography is an act of immortalization, which directly contrasts the ephemeral and cyclical way that nature operates. Remains left behind in the natural world aren't meant to be permanent, and in juxtaposition, the role of the camera is to capture the essence of something exactly the way it is for the test of time. This harps back to the relationship between humans and nature and the different forces at play.
How the REMAINS performance works is that the audience is given a set of instructionals containing the film stills of the REMAINS film to match and follow on a designated path. As they follow the path, they are immersed within the filming locations, where they can observe the land art and remains left behind accompanied by the sound of nature itself, mimicking being within a film itself.
The audience compares and contrasts the film stills with the locations, which showcase how it looked before and right in front of them, they can see how the site has changed since the photograph was taken. Some remains left behind include dresses, seashells, leaves and branches arranged artistically, and footprints which were washed away by the downpour. Not all remains are visible or permanent, but they did exist at one point in time.
The element of being directly at the site in person with the image of the site in one's hands is part of the experience of merging the digital world with the natural world. At this point, they aren't given any context to what had happened to the site, so at the end of the path, the audience is instructed to go inside and sit in front of the TV that will screen the REMAINS film, completing the performance. While the film is playing, the actors within REMAINS are also watching the film, and the audience can look out the window of the house, and see that they are at the location of where the film was recorded, further adding to the experience of bridging the digital world with the natural world.
