An innovative mathematical education for students interested in pure and applied mathematical research
The Faculty of Mathematics of the National Research University - Higher School of Economics and the Steklov Mathematical Institute offer the Research Experience in Mathematics (REM). A three-week long journey for Bachelor and Master students interested in Mathematics, during the summer of 2024 in Moscow, Russia.
The approach is a mix of summer classes and one-to-one interaction with a mathematician from the Faculty of Mathematics or the Steklov institute. This means that a small group of students may follow a few classes and work on a one-to-one basis with their tutor, on an original project. The Faculty of Mathematics at HSE is a top100 University for Mathematical Research; the Steklov Mathematical Institute is part of the Russian Academy of Science, and hosts several world-leading mathematicians. Get your chance to work closely with established researchers in your favorite subjects!
The level and subject of the project is adapted to each student. The tutor proposes an original project to the student: depending on the experience and background of each student this may vary from simpler tasks exploring some mathematical ideas to full-fledged research projects aimed at publishing.
Students are required to study prelimary material before the actual start of the REM. During the three-weeks period, a full time engagement is required. The exact plan of work depends on your tutor, but you are usually required to attend meetings with your tutor 2 to 4 times a week, and then to work independently or with other students.
For restrictions due to classes, the interaction should take place between mid-July and the end of August 2024.
Participation is free of charge. Some limited financial support for accommodation in Moscow is available. For Russian students who are not residing in Moscow, some special funding for accommodation is available.
Online partecipation is possible, but actual presence in Moscow is preferred.
Application is open to university students, Bachelor or Master, majoring in Mathematics. There is no restriction concerning the country of origin or of study. There is no age restriction, although the programme is aimed to students interested in an original approach to Mathematics (in its broader sense) and Mathematical Research, and thus following an academic cursus focused on Mathematics. In rare cases, very young students and students who had a late academic cursus have been admitted.
The student should be fluent either in English or Russian.
There is no strict deadline for applications, but please keep in mind that some sizeable amount of time may be needed to get a Russian visa, depending on your nationality. Moreover, it is better to get acquiainted with your tutor some weeks in advance to prepare preliminary material. For any information, do not hesitate to contact rem@hse.ru (and put mariani.mau@gmail.com in copy), writing "REM" in the subject (just as a white flag to spam filters).
In order to apply to the programme, email to rem@hse.ru and put mariani.mau@gmail.com in copy, and write "REM" in the subject (just as a white flag to spam filters). Please include the following documents/information:
Your CV, including details of your academic cursus (years of study, exams passed, grades, performance percentile if available).
A motivation letter. In the letter, you should in particular explain your main interests in Mathematics. This is of particular importance, since it determines the choice of your tutor.
The contacts (name, position, institutional email) of a person (e.g. a professor at your university, or some mathematician you interacted with) who is available to write a recomendation letter in your support.
Your precise contacts: given name, middle name, family name (as written on your passport). Nationality(ies). Expiry dates of your passport. Email for future contacts. Russian consulate where you will apply for a visa (if needed). Please be careful with this information, because the smallest mistake may dramatically increase the time to get a visa. You will be asked to provide a copy of your passport as well.
If you wish to ask for financial support for the accommodation. We may either host you in the University dormitory free of charge, or pay for a basic accommodation or refund you depending on the current availability. If you may have your own local support (e.g. your university has its own support programme), please give it a priority.
You will receive a confirmation for the received application quickly. The time to make a final decision depends on the availability of tutors.
Be prepared to ask for a Russian visa soon afterwards.
