Welcome to Project SAB-GHOOMo (Simulating Around Blackholes - Gravitationally Honest Orbital and Other Motion).
In this application, you can simulate motion around a black hole - using Einstein's theory of general relativity.
The rules are simple:
Step 1: Choose the type of particle you wish to send into orbit: either a "massive object" or "light" (i.e. any massless particle)
Step 2: Use the scrolling bar below to change the mass of the black hole
Step 3: Set a value of "L" i.e. angular momentum of the orbiting object
Step 4: Choose how far away you want to start your journey by choosing an initial "Radial distance".
Once all that is done, you're ready for lift-off! Click on "Run" to start your journey: the white ball is your chosen object, and the red circle indicates what we call the "point of no return" - or the event horizon (at r = 2M for the Schwarzschild black hole).
Play around with these parameters and see all the cool patterns you get - see the pictures below as examples, and then make your own!
Some example images
A particle being swung out of orbit to infinity
A particle "spiralling" until it reaches the event horizon
A stable orbit, with a constant radius
An elliptical orbit
and here is a more rigorous one that goes into the details of the mathematics:
