This hospital is one of a number of places in Europe where birdsong recordings are used to foster an uplifting and therapeutic experience. Research does show that natural sounds can help relieve stress.

Institutions have begun to put this logic to work. A primary school in Liverpool played a soundscape of birdsong and other nature sounds after a lunch break, when students would normally be drowsy. This appeared to help them concentrate and become more alert. And birdsong is now used at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam, where a lounge plays bird sounds to help travelers relax before flights.

Eleanor says, 'I was inspired to do this research because of an opinion piece in the Guardian by Pete Brash. He was speculating on how bird sounds might help people through the darkest days of winter.'

Australian birds were included in the test for novelty. The sound of red wattlebird, Australian raven and silver gull scored the lowest which means they were the least likely to help with restoring focus and reducing stress. Image by Needpix.

The type of person listening to the bird sound also influences the outcome. Those who appreciated nature benefited the most whereas those who preferred to remain indoors or were noise sensitive felt an indifference or had a negative response.

Many people have positive associations (especially with spring and summer) and memories with bird sounds and therefore feel positive emotions when they hear them. The sounds are comforting and sometimes euphoric.

In this study, we investigate the physiological effects (stress reduction) of masking noise with a natural sound using an experimental design. We conducted the study in a laboratory to avoid bias linked to possible self-evaluation confounding factors in complex soundscape environments, personal elements such as expectation, preconception, and familiarity, as well as the need to control stimuli [32]. By using a laboratory setup, we controlled the soundscape environment as well as the visual environment, which relied on a multisensory virtual reality (VR) 360 setup.

Average reduction change in skin conductance levels (Siemens) during the relaxation period (from onset to end) for the three soundscape conditions. Errors bars indicate standard error of the mean (SEM).

Skin conductance levels (SCL) responses (Siemens) over time between the three soundscapes in the stress period (five minor electrical shocks) and the recovery period. Errors bars indicate the standard error of the mean (SEM).

And this is exactly where our evolutionary origin lies: after all, our ancestors spent most of their time outdoors. Thus a connection to nature and its sounds is anchored in our genes. This is evident when consuming such auditory stimuli.

Natural sounds stimulate the brain differently than artificial sounds. While water splashing, birdsong, and the like are perceived as rather pleasant and thus contribute to inner relaxation and stress reduction, artificial sounds often have a disharmonious effect, creating a hectic atmosphere that can distract your attention (1).

The same applies to the sound of rain and water splashing, which, according to researcher Myriam Thoma from the University of Zurich, is considered life-giving and thus calming (8). This stimulus-response pattern also works with other natural sounds such as wind and thunder.

Each one of the Seven Chakras or master glands in our body is closely related to one specific element, and in case of music therapy, as using natural sounds may heal these energetic centers in a holistic way, those tunes related with those elements will connect deeper with specific Chakras to heal them.

As guilt is the opposite of pleasure, water sounds are really helpful to heal those feelings of self-punishment or letting those tears to finally run down. Being happy is a fundamental right of our soul and with this element we can work on that.

This name means Spectrally Activated Music of Optimal Natural Structure, a passive vibroacoustic and music therapeutic method that integrates neurobiology, psychology and music. It was conceived in 1991 by Dr. Ingo Steinbach, a German sound engineer who found out that listening to classical music caused intense electrical activity in the brain. The same reaction occurred using natural sounds, including bird songs and water sounds.

Your smartphone comes with built-in recording capabilities, such as the Voice Memos app, and is equipped with a camera that can record videos with sound. The video camera and built-in app are less than ideal, however, for recording bird sounds.

According to Eleanor Ratcliffe from the University of Surrey in her thesis examining the restorative perceptions and outcomes associated with listening to birds, bird sounds have the ability to transport yours to nature.

One of the most important aspects in creating and maintaining a successful relationship with an avian companion is the ability to understand your bird's vocalizations and body language. Birds learn to communicate with us through sounds, behavior and actions. Using their body language and vocalizations they can "tell" us when they are happy, content, frightened, sick, hungry, tired, angry, or ready to be held and played with. The ability to communicate is a vital element in any relationship, and it is of utmost importance that bird owners learn to interpret the meanings of their birds sounds and behaviors in order to successfully tame, train, and provide them with the very best of care. While the actions of one particular bird or species do not necessarily mimic the meaning of the same action in all other birds, we have found there to be a general similarity in the actions and meaning of some basic avian behaviors. If your bird exhibits any of the following behaviors, try to ascertain exactly what your feathered friend is trying to tell you, and respond (or refrain from responding) accordingly.

Flashing, dilating pupils can be a sign of aggression, excitement, nervousness, or pleasure. Pay close attention to other behaviors that accompany flashing/"pinning" pupils in order to correctly ascertain the reason for this particular behavior. In a bird that is exhibiting additional aggressive behaviors such as tail fanning, this behavior means "Back Off!". If you persist in attempting contact, you may get a nasty bite for your trouble. Your bird may also be exhibiting this behavior in response to another bird, animal, or human in the vicinity that is disliked.

Loud chattering or crowing is usually heard at dusk, when bird(s) are settling down for the night. It is believed to be an attempt to make their presence known to other birds, or possible to re-establish relationships among the flock. Soft chattering is often how a parrot amuses itself, and is normally a sign that the parrot is feeling safe and content. This muted chatter is also heard when a bird is practicing speech; words and phrases can sometimes be heard if you listen closely.

An indicator of aggression, growling is sometimes accompanied by dilating pupils and raised feathers on the back of the neck. It generally means that a bird does not want to be approached. In these cases it is best to retreat and wait for the bird to calm down before attempting any contact.

These activities are usually indulged in when the bird is feeling safe, secure and content in his surroundings. Expected times are during the early morning hours when the sun rises, and at dusk when the sun is going down, but also occur anytime the bird is feeling especially exuberant and happy! 2351a5e196
