The game revolves around a pair of ninja sent to assassinate a dictator in a futuristic version of New York City. A port was planned for the Game Boy, but was released in a rebranded form as Ninja Gaiden Shadow.

In 2029, the evil Emperor Garuda has taken over the United States of America, building a stronghold in the middle of the nation's "largest city". To stop Garuda and avenge the innocent lives that were lost in his reign, two ninja masters from the Iga clan, Lord Hayate and Lady Kaede, are sent to infiltrate the dictator's well-guarded stronghold and kill him.[2][3]

Shadow of the Ninja is a side-scrolling platform game that can be played by up to two players simultaneously, with one player controlling Hayate (a ninja in purple) and the other as Kaede (a kunoichi in orange). In either mode, the player can decide which character they want to control before the game begins. There are no actual performance differences between either character.[4]

Shadow of the Ninja was well received upon its release. The "Greatest Hits" special issue GamePro gave it a near-perfect score of 23/25 and called it "an above average ninja fare with top of the line graphics and fast-paced gameplay" and "a top flight, fast-paced action cart,"[8] while Electronic Gaming Monthly in particular praised the game's "superb" graphics and sound.[16] Total! gave it a more reserved total rating of 74%, but added that "if this is the kind of game you're into, you won't find a better cartridge for your NES this side of Low G Man."[17] Nintendo Power featured it in the 1991 article "Weird Heroes" for supposedly featuring the "first male-and-female team" in video game history.[18]

A Kage (; Literally meaning "Shadow") is the appointed leader and acting representative of one of the five ninja villages, they are generally one of the most or the most powerful and skilled ninja in their respective ninja village. In Ninja Saga, the Kage of the player's ninja village; Yudai, serves to dispense missions of various ranks at the Mission Room, it could be assumed that this practice is repeated in other various ninja villages, though it is not confirmed at this point. It seems the Kage's job currently is mainly administrative so far in the game's current stage development, very rarely embarking on their own missions, focusing primarily on the affairs of their own village, and acting as a representative that speaks on behalf of their respective village.

Yudai is currently the Hokage (; Literally meaning "Fire Shadow") of the Fire Village of which the characters reside in. All missions are directed by him and enacted by the ninjas selected to do the said mission. He is presumably the strongest ninja in the fire village due to his position. He can be seen in various missions and is always seen in the Mission Room where missions are handed out.

Gara is currently the Raikage (; Literally meaning "Lightning Shadow") of the Lightning Village, however little is known about them at this point. He is the most powerful ninja in the Lightning Village. He can control the thunder. He only appears in the Jounin Exam.

Mamoru is currently the Mizukage (; Literally meaning "Water Shadow") of the Water Village, suggesting he is the most skilled Ninja in the Water Village, whether this is due to his control over the water-element or his other abilties remains unspecified.

Akina is currently Kazekage (; Literally meaning "Wind Shadow") of the Wind Village, it could be assumed that she is the most powerful and skilled ninja in the Wind Village, whether this is due to her control over the Wind element or other various abilities is yet unspecified.

The player first encounters the Kazekage during the Mission; "Backup Request from the Wind Village", in which the player aids the Wind Village in dispatching a number of enemy blossom ninja, who are assumed to be after the Wind Village's ninja scroll.

The current Tsuchikage holds little warmth for other villages, and believes in the independance of the Earth Vilage, believing it to be strong enough to support itself, without the aid of the other ninja villages.

Kage (, literally meaning: Shadow) is a title reserved for the leader of one of the Five Great Shinobi Countries' hidden villages. They are collectively known as the Five Kage (, Gokage, literally meaning: Five Shadows). A Kage oversees the activities of their village, from sending ninja on missions to making the hard decisions regarding the safety of their people. A village's Kage is generally acknowledged as its most powerful ninja. The Kage are renowned as the top shinobi of the continent.[1]

How a Kage is appointed appears to differ from village to village. In Konoha, the Hokage typically appoints their successor. If the Hokage dies or is otherwise incapacitated before they can choose a successor, the selection falls to the Land of Fire's daimy who is advised by his committee as well as the village's elders, the Jnin Commander and a representative of the Anbu. This appointment must then be approved by Konoha's jnin. In Kumo, after the Third Raikage died, his son automatically became Fourth Raikage, a decision made many years earlier.[3] If a Kage should ever choose to retire they will keep their title for the rest of their life, and can assist the new Kage with decision-making and other responsibilities. A retired Kage can even return to full-time leadership if their successor dies, as the Third Hokage did when the Fourth Hokage gave his life to save Konoha, being unable to find anyone both suitable and willing to take on the title of Fifth Hokage at the time.

Because jinchriki were so important to their village, it was a tradition for a jinchriki to be a relative of the current Kage, both to strengthen the jinchriki's loyalties to the village and to display the Kage's might.[4] For example, Killer B is the adoptive brother of the Fourth Raikage and Gaara is the son of the Fourth Kazekage.

In Naruto, the Kage of a village is generally considered to be the strongest ninja in the entire village. Hashirama Senju was born during the Warring States Era and, together with Madara Uchiha, he created Konohagakure. He became the First Hokage of the village and also left his mark as one of the strongest Hokage ever, second only to Naruto Uzumaki.

Madara was born in the Warring States Era, just like Hashirama Senju. His skill rivaled that of the First Hokage and during the Fourth Great Ninja War, Madara finally surpassed Hashirama by becoming the Jinchuriki of the Ten-Tails.

The Yellow Hagakure Ninja is a unnamed hagakure ninja that appears in Kage-Maru's FMV ending in Virtua Fighter Kids. This ninja, Kage, and two other ninjas played a game of mahjoNg. The yellow ninja wins and laughs at Kage derisively, which results in a traumatized and shocked Kage beating up the ninja.

One of the reasons why Naruto became a global success, is because it featured a lot of action, and most of the battles involved ninjas from different villages. In terms of military might, the Five Great Shinobi Villages wielded the most power, and they each had skilled and dangerous ninjas at their disposal.

The Leaf, Mist, Stone, Sand, and Cloud Villages were all led by a Kage, an individual who was considered to be the strongest ninja at the time. Over the course of history, there have been only 27 Kage, but there have been plenty of powerful ninjas who were worthy of the title as well. Some ninjas however, are not worthy of the title, either because they betrayed their villages in some way, or because their personalities are not suited for protecting civilians.
