Introduction
Legal Metrology is an application of legal requirements to measurement and measuring instruments. The objective of legal metrology is to ensure public guarantee from the point of view of security and accuracy of the weights and measurement. Further, it provides the constitutional provision related to the weights and measures which includes the establishment of a standard of weights and measures under th e union list to frame the act and rules, specification of standards and international relations, training in legal metrology, etc., and for weights and measures except for the establishment of a standard under the concurrent list for enforcement of Legal Metrology.
A legal metrology act 2009 is a single act covering the provision of the standards of weights and measures act, 1976 and the standard of weights and measures enforcement in 1985. No registration of users or weights and measures is required.
The penalty provision for different offenses has been increased.
Declaration on pre-packed commodities is mandatory.
Prohibition on manufacture, repair, or sale of weights or measures without a license.
The provision of a government-approved test center has been introduced through this act.
Verification of stamping of weights and measures.
The standardization of units of weights and measures based on the metric system has been introduced through this act.
Approval of a model of weights or measures before manufacturing or importing it into the country.
Only one nominated director of the company will be responsible for the offense done by the company under the Legal Metrology act.
