Supporting Innovative Education with Digital Technologies: A Hands-On Workshop Drawing on Insights from the VALIANT and TEMPLATE European Projects
THE VALIANT Project
Virtual Exchange refers to the different educational approaches to connecting people from different cultural backgrounds in online collaborative learning. More and more school teachers and university educators are using Virtual Exchange to engage their students in online international learning experiences as part of their studies. The Erasmus+ KA3 project VALIANT (Virtual Innovation and Support Networks for Teachers) has carried out a large-scale study to explore different ways that Virtual Exchange can be used in the contexts of Initial Teacher Education and Continuous Professional Development.
This workshop will provide a practical, hands-on introduction to Virtual Exchange and how it can be used by in-service school teachers and by teacher trainers in Initial Teacher Education. Participants will learn about the different approaches to Virtual Exchange and the steps which educators need to take to engage their own students in these exciting online intercultural learning projects.
The TEMPLATE Project
The main objective of the TEMPLATE (Technology-Mediated Plurilingual Activities in Language Teacher Education) project is to create resources that can assist (foreign) language teachers in enhancing their skills for integrating technology-mediated language learning tasks that meet the requirements of a culturally and linguistically diverse student population. To achieve this goal, the project has developed various professional development modules for teachers. These modules were created, implemented and assessed as part of the project's efforts to produce effective teaching resources.
During the workshop, participants will have the opportunity to gain practical experience by using the teaching materials that were created as part of the project. They will also learn how to create technology-mediated language learning tasks and how to effectively incorporate these tasks into their teaching practice.
The workshop is aimed at:
School teachers interested in learning how to engage their students in online communication with classes from other countries
School teachers interested in learning to integrate new technologies in their practice in ways that caters for the needs of their linguistically and culturally diverse learners
Teacher trainers working at Faculties of Education and in Centres of Continuous Professional Development
School management and university management interested in promoting innovative and international approaches to teaching
