Make sure your artwork is original. Your artwork must be created from observation, your imagination, your experiences, or a photograph that you have taken. A photo taken by another person can be used only if you are in it and in the resulting artwork (i.e. a self-portrait). You may use a photo from your family's history but only if the resulting artwork is not a compositional replication of the photo. Do not replicate the work of another artist, use published sources, or a licensed character.
Make sure your artwork is appropriate. Do not include profane references to a deity, obscene language, drug abuse or paraphernalia, images of suicide or criminal violence. Avoid nudity!
All artwork must have resources and references attached to the back of your artwork. These include your photographs, sketches, and production/reflection notes.
You will complete a Student Intent and Artwork Identification Form In the VASE online system. This form will ask you about your research and application, your sources, execution and technique, aesthetics & critical judgement, & personal expression.

You will have a short interview with a juror on VASE Day. Do not be nervous! The juror will ask you how you created your artwork, what parts you like the best, what parts you'd change, and why you created the artwork. Practice answering those questions and it'll be a piece of cake on VASE Day!
Take the Photo Reference Quiz:
When you enter the building, turn left into the cafeteria. Wait here until it's time to go to your juror room. Make sure your artwork is ready and has all of the correct paperwork attached.
Find a juror room with a short line and wait quietly until the juror invites you inside. There are signs to help you find juror rooms. If you need help, ask any of the student volunteers. Don't be nervous! You've already completed the hardest part, creating your artwork. Have fun, and be yourself!
Wait in the cafeteria or the courtyard (weather permitting). Bring board games, a deck or cards, or your sketchbook to pass the time.
When the gym doors open, check out the amazing artwork from your region! The gym will close around 2pm so the State Qualifying Artwork can be chosen.
