Construction details first appear complex. Working through them step by step, and learning each step before proceeding to the next step will make designing the construction details much easier.
Standard details are available for download at the end of the training videos. You can copy those details, use the details as a reference, and adjust the details for the project as necessary.
Any words in the details that you are unsure of, follow this work method and Google to research.
Write down your learnings and discuss with your supervisor daily when you are learning construction details.
Theory about Construction Detail
Stage 1 - Working out the rough height using the Section.
In Vectorworks, use 3D for walls, windows, doors, and roof. Floor slabs are just a flat piece of element.
Do NOT model footings, joists, rafters, roof sheets, and so on.
We work out all the structural elements using 2D modelling.
Exception - If we need to show client 3D walkthrough, the additional 3D element will build in a separate layer called 'Misc 3D' (or similar).
Stage 2 - Working out the structure and the overall rainwater flow
Structure - All structural elements are connected, so all forces can transfer to the ground. For example, if a beam cannot connect with the minor joist, we need to find all connections first.
Overall, rainwater flow - Check roof plan to ensure no water is ponding in the middle of the building. Provide a path for water to leave the building.
Stage 3 - Step 1 Understanding Water.
Most important point - Keeping the water out.
The three forces drive water into the building.
Gravity
Wind driven
Capillary effect
This video discuss the three forces.
Stage 3 - Example. Discussing a standard detail in consideration with the three forces.
Gravity
Wind driven
Capillary effect
Stage 3 - Step 2. Sketch the details.
Consideration:
Structure - Make sure the structure is attached together FIRST.
Following that, step by step putting together the cladding. Considering the three forces that drives water into the building.
Gravity
Wind driven
Capillary effect
Some construction methods were discussed in Stage 3 - Example video.
Stage 3 - Step 3. CAD style of construction details.
Must show all layers of building material.
Must show which layer is in front, and which one is behind.

Using Reference Construction Details
Use reference construction details. Edit as required.
Locating the reference construction detail:
The name indicates what the cladding material looks like. For example, WB is weatherboard cladding. Enter the folder. Then click the 'XXX Intro.pdf' file.
As an example, for weatherboard, this will open:
Select the PDF to view the reference construction detail.
If the PDF shows the correct reference construction detail, import the DWG and edit in our drawing.
Case Studies - Please do NOT watch these videos until you attempt to put the detail together first time.
