Reflective Pedagogy in the College Classroom

If you have not registered yet, please do so here, so we can contact you about the live sessions and with some follow-up information!

Welcome to our series of interactive modules and workshops, designed by Dr. Amy Pistone (Gonzaga University) and Dr. Ellen Lee (University of Pittsburgh), which considers student-centered learning in a university environment. Through a series of interactive asynchronous modules, supplemented by a virtual community (hosted via Discord), participants will explore different theories of teaching and learning to reflect on their own teaching styles and philosophies, as well as consider practical applications of these theoretical concepts to develop their own syllabi, assessments, and instructional practices. A series of live Zoom workshops will encourage participants to engage deeply with special topics and thorny issues in teaching the ancient Mediterranean world.

The workshop consists of two phases. In July, a series of interactive asynchronous modules will be released weekly and supplemented by an interactive virtual community (hosted via Discord). In August, participants can engage in special topic workshops live with Dr. Pistone and Dr. Lee, as well as other pedagogy experts and fellow participants. (N.B. These live sessions assume completion of the July modules).

Throughout the workshop, participants will explore different theories of teaching and learning, reflect on their own teaching styles and philosophies, and learn how to apply research on teaching and learning to all aspects of their teaching, from syllabi to assessments to instructional strategies. Participants who complete the series will leave with practical tips and activities that they can use in their classrooms and pedagogical frameworks they can use to continue developing their teaching practices.

A major goal of this series is to help form and strengthen a community of educators who are invested in improving their pedagogical practices and supporting one another as instructors and as people, this summer and in the future. To that end, this workshop series encourages participants to reflect and think critically about their teaching materials, practices, and philosophies so that they can continue to evolve as teachers throughout their careers.

The series is aimed primarily at college/university instructors based in North America whose teaching focuses on the ancient Mediterranean, but we welcome instructors of all levels, topics, and regions to participate.
