Fuel Assistance benefits range from $243 to $2,419, depending on household income and energy costs. Benefits are calculated taking into account household income, energy costs, number of heating degree days within a region, and housing type. This targeting allows FAP to provide those households with the lowest incomes and the highest energy costs with the highest benefits. (See the eligibility guidelines.) The average benefit is $1530.25. Fuel Assistance benefits are not counted as income when applying for other assistance programs.

Peak Energy Demand Days are a few days each summer, and sometimes during the winter, when demand for electricity is highest. Conserve energy every day, and especially on peak energy demand days. Demand is typically at its highest in the summer between 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. on very hot days. Peak energy demand during the winter months occurs during the morning hours on cold days, but can be throughout the day when cold weather is extreme.

The Office of Home Energy Programs (OHEP) provides bill assistance to low-income households in the State of Maryland to make their energy costs more affordable and to help with the prevention of loss and the restoration of home energy service.

The Electric Universal Service Program (EUSP) provides financial assistance with electric bills. Eligible customers receive help that pays a portion of their current electric bills. Customers who receive EUSP are placed on a budget billing plan with their utility company.
