SLAM WEBSITE - About Us!

SLAM (founded as the SOAR Club at RHS in 2016) is a course dedicated to educating students about racial topics present in today's society. We strive for racial equity by preparing students for challenging conversations and encounters that they may have to deal with. We have daily check-ins for our students to discuss any problematic racial situations they want to discuss. We also seek to keep the classroom a safe space with our Class Norms, and ground ourself on the Courageous Conversations Compass (left)

Veterans: Slam Vet(erans) are second/third-year students from the class who dedicate their years to taking the knowledge they have learned and implementing it into tangible projects in our community. They focus on community-based action projects, intending to better the world around them with the resources they have accumulated over the previous year(s).

WHY WE JOINED SLAM

Through Slam I learned it is important to start in your hometown standing up for what you believe in and recruiting others to get involved.

This class has changed my entire perspective on life, and I am a completely different person for the better since joining and surrounding myself with these amazing people.

I wanted to make change within the people around me, and SLAM has done just that. I have learned so much from this class, and I am learning new things each day I walk into class.

I joined SLAM to create a comfortable and safe community for all, and break the cycle of systemic racism in our nation. By learning about racism, I can find and interrupt racist behavior and speak up for what I truly believe in.

Through this class, I have educated myself on race and now feel more comfortable discussing it wi th my peers and family members.

Through out my time in SLAM I learned how important it is to be an ally but also speak up. This class continues to teach me new things and allows me to make change in the community.
