The Redmi 9 camera setup looks a lot like the one we saw on the Redmi K30 - the snappers are in vertically aligned on an elevated pill-shaped island within a circle on the back. The four shooters are what you'd expect from a budget device these days - wide, ultrawide, macro and depth.

The main camera uses a 13MP OmniVision OV13B10 sensor with 1.12m pixels and 27mm f/2.2 lens. It's the only one to offer autofocus and it's of the regular PDAF variety rather than some fancier technology.

The 118-degree ultrawide-angle camera has an 8MP Samsung S5K4H7 ISOCELL sensor with 1.12m pixels and a 15mm f/2.2 lens. There is automatic distortion correction applied with no option to disable it.

The Redmi 9 has a manual (Pro) mode. It lets you adjust all the settings you'd need - white balance, focus, ISO, and shutter speed. The Pro mode works with the main camera, the ultrawide, and even the macro, although clearly focus settings only apply to the first one.

The Xiaomi camera app offers the so-called AI mode, which tunes the color depending on the scene recognition. It does add a bit of extra punch to your photos, boosting the color saturation and contrast, but some might find the overprocessed look a bit unnatural.

Redmi 9's 8MP ultrawide camera is among the better ones we've encountered through the entire budget and midrange segments, and it can even give some premium midrangers a run for their money. The shots have an average amount of detail, while colors are almost as accurate as those from the main camera. The dynamic range is also great for an ultrawide unit, while the frame-stacking triggered when in Auto HDR almost completely removes noise when sufficient light is present.

The Redmi 9 has a 5MP macro camera, but unlike other Redmi phones, this one has a fixed focus at about 3cm-5cm. If you get the distance right, then you can expect detailed shot of flowers, bugs, cacti, or, say, banknotes.

Still, the 13MP photos taken in low light are nothing special and when it is dark, the camera just struggles to get the exposure correctly. However, when we look at the bigger picture we have to appreciate that the shots are often usable, even if noisy - at the very least for posting on the social networks. Again that's not something you should take for granted in this price range.

The 8MP ultrawide photos at night are noisier and less detailed, but we've seen a lot worse from more expensive phones. We don't recommend using this camera at night, but around sunset and sunrise, it will do an okay job.

The Redmi 9 features an 8MP selfie camera with 26mm f/2.0 lens and fixed focus. The detail in the photos is mediocre, but the contrast and colors are okay. Noise is present, and the dynamic range is average at best, though HDR is available and it restores blown parts rather well.

Portrait mode is available for selfies, too, and it is as competent as a single fixed-focus camera can be. If your haircut is not that complex, and you don't mind a smeared ear or two, it might produce passable results.

Redmi 10 Prime is the successor to the Redmi 9 Prime, and claims to have a lot of improvements over its predecessor. This smartphone sports the new MediaTek Helio G88 SoC and boasts of a 50-megapixel primary camera. However, all of this comes at an increased price: the Redmi 10 Prime starts at Rs. 12,499, higher than the launch price of the Redmi 9 Prime. Is the new Redmi 10 Prime worth the price it commands or should you look elsewhere? I put the Redmi 10 Prime to the test to find out.

The back panel is made of plastic as well. The camera module houses four cameras and protrudes a bit causing the device to rock about when kept on a flat surface. I had the Blue Bifrost colour variant which has a nice gradient pattern at the back, but its glossy finish made it a fingerprint magnet. I had to wipe the back frequently to keep it smudge free.

The Redmi 10 Prime packs in a quad-camera setup consisting of a 50-megapixel primary camera, an 8-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera, a 2-megapixel macro camera, and a 2-megapixel depth sensor. The camera app is pretty much unchanged from what we've seen on recent Xiaomi phones. There are quick toggles for HDR as well as AI, and there is a Pro mode that gives you complete control over settings.

Most of the photos I shot with the Redmi 10 Prime were in overcast conditions. Photos shot in the day came out looking decent with average details. These were oversharpened and did not appeal to me much. The edges of the frames were also slightly grainy. With the ultra-wide-angle camera you can shoot a wider frame but I found the output to be a step down in terms of quality compared to the primary sensor. The output also had slight distortion at the edges.

Low-light camera performance was strictly average. Shots appeared dark and details were missing. With the AI enabled there is a slight improvement in performance but nothing drastic. Night mode produces slightly brighter images but still without the best details.

Selfies taken with the 8-megapixel front camera were acceptable in daylight. The output also seemed sharpened, with blacks bumped up aggressively. Portrait shots had good edge detection and the phone managed adequate background blur in daylight. Low-light selfies shot under a street lamp turned out to be below average, while others taken with a brighter light source nearby were okay.

The Redmi 10 Prime boasts of better hardware than the Redmi 9 Prime but commands a higher price as well. While it does offer better performance than its predecessor, the cameras are lacking. You get a high-refresh-rate panel and a big 6,000mAh battery which should benefit casual users. At its starting price of Rs. 12,499, this phone will have to compete with the Realme 8i which has better specifications on paper (we'll review it soon). The higher priced variant of the Redmi 10 Prime is priced around the same as the Redmi Note 10S (Review) and Redmi 10T 5G (Review), both of which offer better hardware.

The camera interface looks clean and is very smartly organised. Swiping left reveals the multiple camera modes such as Panorama (wide 360-degree view), Manual (provides more controls), beautify (blurs marks on face), straighten (this allows you take shots by holding the phone at any angle yet get a straight shot). Swiping towards right shows 12 cool camera filters with preview for all.

This is a landscape shot of a high rise taken during daytime. The camera here is trying to oversaturate colours in the sky for more effect, giving it a deep blue tinge. In terms of detail reproduction the camera looks capable of taking on any other budget smartphone. Even on bigger screen one can see the finer details of the building clearly without any significant blurring.

This is landscape shot of the Indian national flag on a partly cloudy day. While the detailing in this shot is not as good as the one taken with a clear sky, colour looks good and pretty much accurate. One can clearly make out the white clouds from the blue sky. Interestingly, it was able to light up the green cover in the background. Most budget smartphone cameras tend to make it darker.

The camera comes with quick focus technology and also supports manual touch to focus. However, none of them could get the camera to focus on every aspect of the biscuit. Some areas are clearly visible while the rest looks blurred. Colour reproduction, however, is accurate and one can make out the darker chunks of chocolate in it.

Like most budget smartphone cameras, low-light photography is not its forte. The Redmi 3S prime has not just failed to get the colours on the wall right (it is originally orange but looks like some shade of browns in the image) but shows a lot of noise around the lamp as well. Using flash is the only way you can get a respectable picture out of it in low-light.

As with nearly every budget smartphone, the Redmi 9 Prime ships with a quad-camera array on the back. While they might not seem that great on paper, they resort to AI to fill the gaps and create surprisingly great results.
