Red Lake
Averno Lake is the only lake of volcanic origin in the Campi Flegrei area, famous for bradyseism and the constant threat of earthquakes. The lake is also called the ‘Gate to the Underworld’, because Greeks and Romans believed it to be the entrance to the realm of the dead, precisely because of its sulphurous and volcanic nature, as recounted by Virgil in the Aeneid and perhaps also by Dante at the beginning of his Divine Comedy.
At times, the image of the lake as the ‘Gate to the Underworld’ becomes even more unsettling, because its waters become red, a portent or symbol of other worlds and dimensions.
We live in the area of the red lake, in an area of ancient culture and mysterious nature. We emerge from the fire and are always boiling and moving. We must be accurate to master the unknown and swift to prevent it.
