CHRIST HEADSHIP HUMAN LEADERSHIP

Christ’s Unique Headship and the Ministry of Human Leadership

The New Testament distinguishes the unique headship of Jesus Christ from the legitimate leadership exercised by human beings within the Church. Christ is the Head of the Church (Ephesians 1:22–23; 4:15–16; Colossians 1:18), possesses supreme lordship, and remains the ultimate source and standard of ecclesial authority. Human leaders, by contrast, exercise a delegated and accountable ministry under His lordship.

Consequently, the biblical rejection of domination does not constitute a rejection of leadership. Jesus explicitly contrasts the domineering exercise of authority characteristic of worldly rulers with the servant-oriented leadership required among His disciples (Matthew 20:25–28; Mark 10:42–45). Peter similarly instructs elders to shepherd God's flock willingly and eagerly, not to domineer over those entrusted to their care, but to become examples to the flock, in anticipation of the appearing of the Chief Shepherd (1 Peter 5:1–4).

This distinction establishes a governing principle for Biblical Church Protocol: Christ possesses unique headship; human leaders exercise subordinate leadership. The former is intrinsic to Christ's identity and position; the latter is a ministry entrusted to qualified people and subject to biblical standards, communal discernment, and accountability.

The Church therefore requires neither the elimination of human leadership nor the elevation of human leaders into positions of unaccountable spiritual sovereignty. Its proper order preserves both Christ's supremacy and the legitimacy of qualified, accountable, servant-oriented leadership.
