According to the Environmental Protection Agency, local landfills account for approximately 26% of total methane emissions for the U.S. Therefore, diverting waste from landfills is paramount to the future preservation of fragile Florida ecosystems, the wellbeing of the general public, and the overall health of the natural environment. Although Alachua county had a 68% recycling rate in 2018, the rest of Florida counties are hovering around 49%. A more educated public is needed to help reduce contamination and improve the lifecycle of products purchased. The issue of waste management has led us to find an alternative solution to the continued effort of waste education and diversion.
We provide personalized recycling options based
on the products you purchase
REcyeipts is a personalized tool that uses receipts to encourage recycling habits. This tool is designed to help users snap a picture of their receipt and connect them to recycling resources. Adaptable to users' choices and the decisions they make about their waste.
REcycling saves resources, helps improve public health, and enhances job opportunities. It helps prevent pollution and exploitation of nonrenewable natural resources, such as, trees and metals.
REceipts reflect consumer choices and the costs of the products they buy. However, receipts don't reveal the environmental costs of products' packaging.
Start with either a single product or your entire receipt! We use your location and Optical Character Recognition (OCR) to interpret what is on your receipt and match it with the correct store. Hundreds of stores track their inventories with online services, and we partner with them to access their data.
Using the data from the stores, we connect the product materials with lifecycle assessments completed by Evtek, a start-up in New York City focused on rewarding recycling, to evaluate the CO2 equivalent impact of each product on the environment.
Based on your product purchases and your purchase location, we determine the packaging materials. Next, we provide 1) a score for the recyclability of the product packaging materials you purchased, 2) alternative products with better packaging scores, and 3) waste management advice applicable to your purchased packaging materials.
Every receipt scanned receives a score and you can see which products have the greatest impact on your CO2 equivalent footprint, as well as your improvement over time.
